Fresh out of the service, new in town, in a new to me 61 ford galaxie convertable, with a new but solid friend named John.
Driving down the hiway under a normally overcast sky but this time it was sunshine and warm air, top down. Under the influence of a banned substance and in no hurry.
Steppenwolf's "Magic carpet ride" was on the radio when a ring necked pheasant appeared on my left, going across in front of the windshield. It appeared to stutter in it's path long enough to look at us and us at him. The sun highlighted his blood red cheeks, glowing white necklace, oil slicked feathers. Eye connection and it was gone.
John and I looked at each other. Words would have been useless.
We went and got blitzed.

Sounds like me at the same juncture in my life. Happy Days, but not quite like Richy Cunningham. My ride was a well used but presentable '63 Impala convertible. Installed a cheap Kraco 8 track player to augment the AM radio . After a while started fishing again. Didn't do much of that during my military days, there wasn't much time off duty in those times to pursue it. After some rough times, came out the other end pretty much OK. Love Steppenwolf too.

Might be fear of the nearing end but I'd love to go back and do it all over again.

For sure. Best thing to gaze through while camping deep in the woods. Like being a very thoughtful owl. With unscripted "movies" running as well. Quite an experience.
