I was wondering what is everyone's preferred form of salmon/Steelhead fishing and why

also what line test do you feel is most effective for a 10-15lb fish.

Depends on place , water, weather and overall conditions. A general answer to a general question?

I can’t speak for “everyone” but mine is several different ways depending on when and where. I troll as well as drift fish from both bank and boat but the bait depends on where and when I’m fishing. Everything from spinners to quick fish, to flatfish, to crank baits, to roe, to shrimp, to tuna balls, to just straight yarn.

Catfish hunter nailed it in terms of technique's. I generally use 20 or 30 lb braid as my mainline with a 12 lb leader. Leader can be adjusted to specific water conditions, but 12 lb is my all around "go to".

I wish I could give some good advice, but have been trying to catch some NJ salmon, but to no avail.
The last time we were out for a few hours before sunset (last weekend), we tried spoons, spinners, trolling, drifting live bait on top and slightly below, and not one hit.
What really got me ticked was that they were jumping full body out of the water...even within 15 feet of our boat.
Maybe a drag net or shotgun with fish shot is what I need.
Gonna keep trying, though.

Depending on where you live you can catch both salmon and steelhead in the same river just at different time of the year. I prefer fishing from a drift boat or sled on rivers both casting and pulling plugs. I fished for years from the bank but bank access became a problem. I have also fish for salmon in the local saltwater trolling or mooching (drifting with the tide). I really recommend you start with salmon - they are more plentiful and accessible. Steelheading can be frustrating although highly rewarding. Good luck!!
