Thanks for having me as a new trout fisherman.
I am in Ontario, Ca and am looking to fish nearby San Bernardino Mountain lakes and local regional park lakes. I am willing to backpack too.
I have fished Lake Gregory 4xs and gotten skunked on nightcrawlers, power bait, mice tails and rooster tails.
Went at daybreak till 4 pm and zilch. There must be something missing in all these attempts. HELP! I have read some really good posts by others and now it's my turn to reach out. Thanks, frios.
Welcome to the Stage Tyvek. If you follow any of my posts at all you will know that I have not caught a trout since December of 2019. I fish quite a bit north of you, but there seems to be something going on. I've talked to a couple guys on here that have had some trout success, but for the most part trout fishing has been a bust for just about everyone for the past two seasons. Fishing has been lousy on the eastern side of Sierras and all around here where I live. I spent a few days up by Hat Creek a couple weeks ago because that's one of the spots where they were being caught pretty consistently, but the skunk followed me up there. If you don't mind driving a little ways, think about driving up to Lake McSwain outside of Merced - I've seen some folks on here that have had pretty good luck there. Hey, if you find a spot where they're biting please let us all know and post some pictures. Good luck to you.
Iโm certainly no pro, but not being able to catch trout on night crawlers is pretty amazing. I agree there is something strange going on. Maybe those lakes got hit pretty hard early in the spring.

Hi Spirit, has anyone checked with the DNR re any netting or shocking they have done to see what if any the population of trout is like. Just use some heavy line if something is eating all these guys and is GROWING BIG.

You can try buying one of those fish finders that have around a 30โ cord attached from the transducer to the hand held device. You can toss the transducer from shore and see whatโs going on. Amazon has them for around $80.

You are using the right bait at lake Gregy how long is your leader that makes a big difference at that lake and there are certain spots that are better than others on the lake and how many times they stock the lake.
Don't gave up !!
I use a 1 or 2lb leader line and always Floralcarbon. With a sliding egg with.
Good luck.

So your a SoCal guy you need to travel North to the Eastern High Sierras for amazing trout fishing. Check into Bridgeport Reservoir or Twin Lakes. You will not be disappointed
Just got back from two days renting cabins at McSwain, fished from 3am to 10 pm and all day the next day 5 fisherman using everything on the menu you can name. Fish jumping all over the place and nothing!! At the end of the day the third day caught a spotted trout with a lure. That was it! Not happy
