Hey guys it’s Katty…I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to look for at a pond or body of water to know if there are even any fish in it ? Probably a dumb question but like I said I’m so new to this

Only way to find out is to cast some bait out there and wait. Good luck Katty.
If it is just a puddle, no! But any long-standing, or flowing stream, probably. If it is a large pond, lake, or substantial stream, Yes. The only foolproof test is to get a line with bait in there and haul out a big one. Just Sayin...RJS

As the other guys said, put something in the water with a hook in it. I would suggest something with a plastic bobber ( float) a small hook and some sort of real worm or night crawler. That would be a starting point...My 2cents

Other people fishing a body of water can also be a good indicator there’s fish in it. Especially if they’re catching. Why yes, I have been called captain obvious from time to time… Good luck and enjoy the journey.

Thanx grinds that’s pretty much what I been doin?
Welcome Katty,
If ducks and geese use it, there are fish. To cover the water safely, without knowing the depth try an elbow spinner like a Beetle Spin. They sink about 1’ per second, so cast it out in various “fishy” looking spots and vary your retrieves. Try shady spots or weed edges first. As others have stated, a slip bobber, a #6 hook with a 1” piece of night crawler threaded on will catch just about anything which may be swimming in there, too. Good luck and nice looking dog!
Like everyone else said a night crawler under a bobber will catch about anything in the pond. But don’t leave it in one spot too long. If you’re not getting a bite move and try again. You’ll get a bite and no telling what it might be, bluegills, bass or a big catfish. They all like worms. Try fishing them on the bottom too. Use light mono line 8# or lighter should work best. Good luck Katty and have fun, thanks for the pictures.

Good Morning Katty,
I usually watch a tank or pond around dawn or dusk for any activity.
Birds skimming the water, Herons stalking at the edge, insects around the water.
I look for hoove prints, mainly deer and cattle.
I check the types of vegetation growing in and around the tank or pond.
I also wear polarized sunglasses which help me see into the water.
You can usually see small feeder fish close to the bank.
I also look for turtles. A few are OK but A LOT of turtles means its tougher time catching fish.
I like to look around to see if there has been anyone else fishing there. Sometimes you can figure out what kind of fish they were targeting. For example, sticks setup to be rod holders usually means cat-fishing, lots of beer cans means people waited for a bite. Just foot prints moving around the shore usually means Bass fishing, cast and retrieve method.
I don't like to fish "BAD" water. I take the time to think about, are there fish, where would they be, is this an active "ALIVE" tank or stream.
Hope that helps.

PS. You might like to try fishing out towards New Braunfels. Google it.

Hi Katty, check with the locals for starters if can find in your area. Throw out some bread on the water and see what happens. I posted something before re two small lakes recommended near golf course. Did really well first day and as experiment, went back next day, same weather conditions, same time of day and hours fishing and only caught 2 bass. Have to consider that someone else before you shell shocked the fish and they need some quiet time to recoup. And last but not least, there just aren't any worthwhile fish there to catch. Good luck.
