Big fish (very short) story !

Article 'borrowed' from Google - no specifics given, so I'm guessing this was from a biological survey and not
a 'hook and line' catch !

The young lady in the photo next
to the fish (for scale) is Jennifer Johnson, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service biological research tech !

The fish in the photo is one of the
biggest lake sturgeon ever recorded
in the U.S. and was caught recently
in the lower Detroit River - it tipped
the scales at 240 lbs. and measured
6 feet/10 inches long and was estimated to be just over 100 yrs.
old !

I saw a newspaper article years ago of a guy who had caught a 9ft 450# sturgeon in California…🐟on

Was it from the 'salt' ? This one was referred to as a lake sturgeon, so I'm guessing land-locked as opposed to sea-run ?

As stated in an earlier post,
I just copy/post what I read and seldom search for verfication -
I just post 'em as I see 'em !

You’d need a come-a-long and a phone pole to land that thing

It would have had access to the salt. It was caught up river from San Francisco Bay in upper San Pablo bay. At that point it has transitioned to fresh water…🐟on

I guess what I was trying to say
(imply ?) in the previous post is
that salt-run sturgeon tend to run larger than their strictly freshwater
lake sturgeon 'cousins' ? Not
positive, but I think it was in some fishing magazine awhile back !

It appears to be a WHITE Sturgeon. I have habitually hooked a lot of Sturgeon in the PNW US. GREEN Sturgeon are SALT generally. White Sturgeon and GREEN thrive in Brackish water but GRREN is Salt. White Sturgeon love food no matter where they have to find it just as Green do. If one enjoys Caviar Sturgeon are decimated for the fancy cuisine.

White and Green in this region. There are subspecies that have little differences around the globe. I have caught Sturgeon bigger than some watercraft I use to fish from. I have also caught tiny sturgeon that were an inch or two long. Prehistoric Exoskeleton fish that will slice your skin with its skin. Leather type skin but very minimal bones in meat that need filleted. Pull spinal cord skin them or steak them. It is white fish meat much like Halibut. It is very good smoked BBQed Baked is really good with Salt pepper and butter. It is like chicken just heat it up til done.

I believe you're referring to Beluga sturgeon from the Caspian Sea and the rivers that run into it, the source
of the famed 'Beluga' caviar ! Love most fish and shellfish, but I draw
the line at fish eggs and snails ! No problem with raw oysters or frog
legs, though !

That’s true. Land locked white sturgeon, as found in the Columbia River are a salt water species and reach lengths of near 20 feet and have adapted to fresh water. Fresh water, originating, white sturgeon don’t get nearly as big as the ones from salt water. The green sturgeon are a much smaller and different looking species of sturgeon. The Powder River in Wyoming is full of green sturgeon and a huge one is about 3 feet long but resembles the White sturgeon to some degree. Baby white sturgeon, up to about 5 years old, have very sharp, protective plates down their backs and along their sides. The green sturgeon don’t have the protection to that extent. Once a white sturgeon forages the bottom for any amount of time the sharp, saw like, protection is pretty much gone. A good fishing buddy of mine from Illwaco Washington is a fish biologist specializing in salt water white sturgeon. He claims the White sturgeon locked in the Columbia River by dams reach lengths greater than they did in the Pacific Ocean. Mostly due to abundance of food and lack of competition for their food source. Makes sense.

Oh yeah they haven’t harvested white sturgeon for caviar for decades. Not wild ones anyway. I saw pictures of when they did but it was long before my 66 years. Speedy stuff but good on garlic crackers. Lol. I was given a jar of it a while back and I think the garlic kills the fish egg taste so it wasn’t too bad. Nothing I’d pay $300.00 a pound for though.

who has the right to kill a 100-year-old fish, catch and release is not a bad idea
