Types of Trebles

I’ve been told buy several that I should always change stock trebles on baits like crank baits (and some of my big bait trebles are starting to look pretty rough) - but there are so many types (round bend, short shank, wide gap, hybrid ...) and I don’t know the treble sizes on my crank baits.
I do know that there are a number of good suppliers (Owner, Game, VMC, Berkeley ...) but I’m lost on the types & sizes.
Help?

I personally don’t use round bend treble hooks because they are easier for a fish to throw , because of the design of the hook . One of the best trebles on the market is a mustad triple grip. It is not a round bend. They are fairly easy to find, and reasonably priced. And remember, the higher the number , the smaller the hook. Example: a number 8 treble is a lot smaller than a number 2 treble.... usually the bigger the crankbait, the bigger ( lower numerical description ) the treble. Deep cranks , ( 1ounce size ) have a #2 treble most of the time. Jerkbaits usually have much smaller hooks, like a #6 or #8 . Hope this helps.....My 2cents.

I use a 4x 4 on my deep jr thundersticks. They don't bend. Word of advice, have sidecutter that will cut the hook. Personally have found out why.

A change in hook size/weight, can major alter your bait movement. I use a twin bowl gold scale. You can order a hook chart on the internet. don't download one unless it has a scale on it to adjust your print size, because almost all printers do not print to exact size. The scale works great for going from treble to single hook. I expect a digital powder scale is just as good or better, but not as phytologically satisfying to me.

Hey Red this might help. Jann's Netcraft has a catolog that has a couple of pages of pictures of actual sizes of all kinds of hooks a lot of the lures come with premium hooks already on them hence no need to replace the cheaper lure brands and saltwater lures usually benefit from the swap normally you don't want to change the size as this will affect the action of the bait tho experiment sometimes makes for a better bait🐟🎣😀👍
