I want to change oil and filter. How do I hook water to it to cycle and check for leaks.

If Mercury jet motor is designed the same way as a regular outboard you will need a intake muff Iโ€™m not sure if thatโ€™s the correct name but itโ€™s rubber pieces that go over your intakes on the motor that have a water hose attachment so you can flush the motor ๐Ÿ™ but if you are doing a oil change on your Merc and itโ€™s the same as all mercโ€™s about half way down the right side of the motor you will see a stainless steel fitting you connect a 5/8 hose to it and loosen but donโ€™t remove this is your oil drain fitting good luck ๐Ÿ€

Ask Grizzly 17, he's got one.

Gunner you can not use muffs. Look on the lower left side. You should see a short rubber hose that snapped on to a grease fitting. Above that you'll see a bolt. You'll need a flushing kit for a jet. Pics of mine included. Remove bolt above grease fitting screw threaded end into bolt hole. Attach water hose to other pc then it snaps onto pc you screw in. Turn water on n fire her up. Mine is n 03 60/40. ๐Ÿ‘

That is cool you can get a fitting. I have all sorts of outboard laying around here and at Ranch. My current Boat I'm using the most has a Bearcat 55hp 4 cycle. I use a large plastic trash barrel to start it off the water and to flush salt water out. Its water intake is underneath the cavitation plate facing downward. I think there may be some sort of way of getting a water hose / rubber set up but will be real tricky the prop is right there.

Maybe. My old Johnson n my 15hp 4 stroke have the intakes on the side so the muffs worked. Good thing about having it in a water tank is you can safely give it some throttle. Good luck

Thanks Griz. I tinkered with it for months when first got it. It is pretty well running awesome especially for mid 60's 4 cycle. They are solid cast iron. No bolts to stretch no dissimilar metals for more electrolysis or warp. They are used on double decker houseboats etc globally. If over heat or lose an impeller they don't destroy themself. Awesome to have a 50-60year old 4 cycle that puuuuurs. They were ahead of their time. You can read a really good few write ups on them. Bearcat 55 hp outboard. I have several all different HP Evinrude Johnson. Yes they work well with hose on the muffs. Uncle was a racer he told me racers used alcohol to flush salt out of boat motors.

Jeremy I don't remember ever hearing about Bearcat ob but I'll look them up. I'm starting to like old school stuff again. Not trying to relive my childhood. Just old enough to appreciate the quality of some older items. When I found the Berkeley fiberglass rod in the free box n it was a 7'er I was like a kid. Catch first bass on it Monday n I luv it. Felt the slightest tap. It will be with me on every trip. It's nice you can still find parts for alot of older motors. Have a good day brother .Keep doing what makes you happy. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

I'm really stoked to have a neat good running boat as old as I am. That is a really cool thing in my opinion. especially a 4 cycle. It burns 1 gallon of fuel if idling for 5 hours. It can troll at idle. No smoke etc. Yeah lool em up just to read about them. I am very much the same about old school COOL. Bearcatv55hp Outboard. It will tell you the history. The engine was in cars. It was used for a lot of industrial applications. I am not sure if there is an engine as efficient today for the applications. Military used them because could be tied to a parachute and lightweight for the HP. PT boats had them on Generators etc.

My thought was to have both a prop and a jet. if only they could be changed out. prop lower unit for lakes and weed areas. A jet lower unit for rocky and shallow water areas.

Jig you can change from one to the other if you want to. Was a time in this area where guys was having aftermarket jet units installed. Shops had lower units laying around. You'd have to see how much trouble it would be. If I put a prop on mine I'd have use of all 60 hp. You lose hp with the jet.
