.....And on my first cast! Never tried to catch stripers before this season started so I wasn't really sure what all the fuss was about catching these fish.Last time The Professor and I went fishing I managed to catch one on cut herring but couldn't keep it because it was only 19 inches. But the thrill of bringing it into the boat immediately got me hooked and I caught the fever and realized what the fuss was all about! So Halloween afternoon we went out and started fishing near the rocks in the area between the Locks and Short Stay and as we got to the area we stopped the boat but didn't anchor and decided to do some casting as we were still drifting and on my first cast I got a hit! Using something the Professor had bought me last time he was out buying bait at the Bait Shack that caught his eye. After doing some research I believe it is called a flutter spoon. It's sort of oblong , very shiny silver metal on part of it with the other part being blue with metal shiny flecks in it. But if I am wrong please correct me! I know people have caught way bigger fish than this but this is the largest fish I have ever caught,(not counting The Professor I managed to reel in! LOL) my PB! It was so exciting and then after that absolutely nothing , notta, zilch! We both had 3 rods out each baited with a variety of stuff, jello soaked chicken, cut herring, shrimp trying to catch something, anything. And our 4th pole we were using for casting. So I got Treated then Tricked. But you know how it goes....They say.....A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work... or something like that!
LOL

Up to 25lbs plus .
I'm not a fish eater but I hear they make great fish tacos.
My and I were fishing at night on the river by us in his boat and he caught one that was huge he's 6'3" and the striper measure from his belt buckle to the bottom of his boot !!
It went 40 lbs.
Sorry no pictures it was 1am in the morning and we even released her looked like she had sponed all her eggs and we let her go.
This was about 8yrs ago.and talk about a fight!!!
Glad you got the thrill of the fight.
A good luck fishing
Andy

Congratulations fishful. That is really awesome you got hooked. That adrenaline rush will never EVER be forgotten. Try and get more information from Saw he catches a bunch of them on west coast and is a wealth of knowledge on stripers. Hopefully you can get more info in your area too. I remember Saw suggesting a faster than normal troll speed than for other fish recently. I really hope you catch more even if its in a little different place or technique. Im glad yur hooked. Thanks for sharing.
I think you will hook many more and thanks for sharing. The grin says it all.
Gordan is in SC.
Congrats to a nice fish. Catching more would have been better but one is better than none. Nice pics

Nice Striper Fishful, you'll probably catch more throwing or trolling lures. If you must bait fish, then the local live bait would work best, shiners, shad or whatever the natural forage is. Chicken, shrimp and stuff like that are better for Catfish or Drum, or other bottom fish.
I have no idea how big they get down there, in a lake. Up here they live in the ocean and get pretty big. The world record was caught about 30 miles from my house, but only 3/4 of a mile off the coast. Good luck, and keep trying.

That seems to be the Smallmouth food of choice in JB's neighborhood, in Montana too. I have caught Largemouth on a Rainbow colored Rapala. I don't think were allowed to use actual Rainbow Trout, or any gamefish as bait. Panfish are allowed however.
