I love bottom fishing, as many northeast anglers do. My favorite to target is tautog which is highly structure oriented and in order to fish the bottom a lot of lead is used and lost to snags. Many of my tackle shops around me definitely overcharge for just a few ounces of lead (getting 8 sinkers for around $30) and I was wondering if anyone knew of any websites/places that sell lead at a reasonable price? I’ve seen discount fishing stores for fly patterns and was wondering if anyone knew of something similar. If you also know of a website in which bulk buying lead decreases the price that would be appreciated! Good luck this tog season, the white chins are waiting!

I am from the other side, but I have heard of people using inexpensive stuff like links of chain, other asst hardware, like
Bolts, etc. They also say how snag resistant the chain link is.

With the chain as sinker, when a fis is lost you can legitimately say, "That fish was off the chain"

Have you tried tire shops for the old lead weights, or plumber outfits that have old lead, ?? What is tautog??

Lead prices, like everything else, have gone through the roof. Back in the day, we used old sparkplugs, rusty nuts and bolts, and pieces of scrap metal when fishing in the rocks, or over wrecks.

From what I understand, we no longer have any lead smelting in the US because they were shut down by the $#@!^%$#@. This has made lead much more expensive. I've thought about making little bags from onion sacks and filling them with rocks to use as weights on a Santee rig fir cats at Conowingo dam where the bottom is scoared to bedrock.

My father had a saying,--- Doesn't have to be right, just has to work.

Back in the day, you could buy tobacco bags with draw string in bulk. Used for roll your own. I now make my own for near nothing out of pocket. Fill with sand and you are good to go. They also work great in the surf. Just be sure in your state that they are not considered drug paraphernalia. I think that is why they disappeared in the first place.
They can be filled with sand, rocks, gravel or scrap metal like rusted nuts. Rebar can also make good weights. I have a cut off saw and drill press, so it is a no brainers. A can of rust inhibitor paint is recommended if you use any metal other than lead.

J-DeV Go on to NJFishing.com and search the classifieds. There is a guy who makes and sell all types of lead sinkers.

I've seen a lot of good substitutes for lead. Mine is old window weights.
