Do most people who troll for fish such as stripers have a second small motor just for trolling? Thank you

Hey Forest. I find fishin for stripers out here in California, a lot of the fishermen troll WAY to slow for them.
We use big 1 OZ Rattle Traps and such kind of lures and we troll bout 5mph. I have a 60HP 4stroke on my boat and we can troll just fine with it. Brad has a 40 HP and we troll just fine with his also.
I suppose if you had a BIG motor you MIGHT need a smaller one but don't feel that you're goin too fast when trollin for stripers. Just be SURE to use a lure designed to go that fast. If the lure you're usin won't troll that fast then you're not gonna catch fish unless you go slower and stripers like a lure that's movin. At least that's my advice for where we fish for stripers. But what do I know. Might not work for you where you fish.

You ask " What do I know". I say you know plenty and the proof is in all the films. All the stories the pictures the kindness you have in sharing your abilities and equipment is really AWESOME Saw.

If your trolling for trout or Salmon etc sometimes a smaller motor is a plus. An old trick is to use a anchor sock..drift sock...water parachute whatever you want to call them. It will slow a boat down. There is trolling plates to change the angles or block the prop thrust. I actually used 5 gallon buckets with several good sized holes drilled in them. The holes are a must just like anchor socks have. If no holes the water is NOT forced through the bucket or anchor sock.

Don’t know a thing about trolling for stripers but I troll a ton for salmon. My 9.9 four stroke kicker works perfect just above an idle for that in the Columbia River. Depends on the boat. Mine is a deep V aluminum 18 footer. Very stable on the river. On lakes I do the same thing but a little slower. Just the kicker and it works great. My main is a 150 merc though. A little over kill for trolling. If you have a flat bottom boat, tri hull, anything that don’t sit well in the water you’ll need help from a drag of some kind. Most people I fish around are all using a smaller motor for actual fishing. Number one it’s cheaper and if it’s 4 stroke it quieter. Good luck.

I use a 9.9 kicker for walleye trolling. Keeps speed control more manageable. Also saves the main motor from a day of idling.

As usual you will get a variety of opinions on this. For freshwater lake fishing here in NC I use a trolling motor for all of my trolling and I have the best results with live bait which should be trolled slow below 1 mph. If trolling with lures, they are designed to work best above 2 mph and you should be able to slow down your regular motor without a second motor. As usual it depends on the conditions, the species and the type water being fished and of course the wind conditions at the time of the trip.

Don’t know what HP your main motor is, so a trolling motor may be the way to go for you. We use a trolling motor for Salmon on the ocean and in the bays, and run 2.5 to 3 mph and that works well for us. If Saw says 5 mph is the speed for Stripers, I’d go with that. I’d look at the lures he uses and any other info he can give you. He and his fishing partners catch more Stripers then anyone else on the Stage, he knows striper fishing. Good Luck Forestfisher!!
