I have heard that they are picking up Lingcod close to the entrance of Morro Bay landing. I am headed there on Thursday and try to get one of these monsters on my new boat. Any tips would be appreciated.

Took a charter out of morro bay fishing for longbow and halibut. We went out away from the docks and motored up north along the coast line drifting on the sand bottom with a 3oz sinker and a high and low rig. Used squid and anchovies for bait. Unfortunately I didn't hook a cod other did and one person a halibut. Had a good experience would do it again.

Kelpie is best bait for Lingcod. Kelpie fish LIVE. They do NOT have sharp spines sticking out of their fins. Lingcod also spawn near shore in colder seasons.

If you don't have live bait, Get a few Point Wilson
Darts 3.5 to 6 oz. or similar lead jig and fish it with fast jerks near the bottom. Be sure to let it free fall after jerked up a few feet. I have also had outstanding luck with a 12 oz, jig, and a 12 in. soft plastic Gulp eel. If you want to catch live bait, my favorite is greenling, though sand dabs also work well. I catch them using Gulp Alive 2 inch sand worms threaded on a number 6 hook tied finessed style 6 inched above the weight with a second hook 12 inches above the weight. Fish kelp for greenling and sand for sand dabs. If no luck with the lings, fry up your bait and enjoy as they are great eating.

If you go about 1/4to 1/2 mile northwest of the Rock, youll be in sandy bottom, fish for sand dabs ,sabiki rig tipped withsmall pieces of squid they are plentiful,,, then use the sand dabs for lings,,or 8 to 12 oz. Jighead with large plastic grub(6"to8") tipped with sliced squid in rocky bottom thats what we've done well with out of Morro Bay or Avila,, good luck and tight lines ,watch that wind after 2pm!

Baddass lings Jeremy . Down here in bodega bay sand dabs or even artificial dabs work good . Old days we took chrome pipe full of lead or anything shiny . Those ling cods are a pretty aggressive fish !!

Pretty much exactly what works here onshore too. The lead head with rubber and squid on the hook. Deck hands use to always say you don’t need anything but rubber… but when I always added squid or shrimp ( because store didn’t have calamari ) and hook most fish on boat…. As well as always tip the deck hands and Captain…. Now they say awesome.. perfect… I will add it for you. They just don’t want to add something to everyone’s set up.

Yes sir. They are considered a ferocious predator. Will never stop eating if possible.

The pictures up higher on post with the bait I hooked and the Lingcod was my best Ling I got to take… I look forward to more. I was just chatting with James the Captain of Samson last night and it’s been high seas for a bit but he was hoping to get out today. They are about to shut down for few months as always. But now is about best time to go on charters in Oregon for the Lings. Can go after holidays too when they open back up. Oregon Pacific Coast is unpredictable for ocean forecasts this time of year so hard to plan a for sure trip. The charters are safer than just going out if you ask me. They have a network and only go when it’s…. Kind of safe…. I have a grandson I want to take fishing someday so I don’t want to be crab or shark food.

Hey Buddy I bought these from an old Gent that makes them in Coos Bay about 3years ago he swore by them and told me if I didn't catch fish he'd give me my money back, well I will share my now secret bottomfish catcher, something about the shiny copper and small electrical pulse it supposedly puts out when bouncing off the bottom, I do put sand dabs or large strips of Squid on these, anyhow I've caught more fish than usual, coincedence, who knows, with my fish finders and able to read the bottom who really knows, but it works for me,,,😃They are 8oz-16oz copper pipe jigs

My cousin uses the exact thing for Lings. He is commercial fisherman. He has been scuba diver for most of his life. He said Lings are attracted to noise. The copper / lead is dissimilar metals and emits electric current.
