All of my life I have heard the expression “never fish on the first day of a cold front” yet the people who say it are out there fishing. I understand that there is a sudden rise in barometric pressure but does that change in the weather discourage anyone from fishing?

They are hoping everyone else stays home.

Being out fishing is always a good day and there is always a chance that you will catch something. If you stay home, you for sure aren’t gonna catch anything

It just means you have to fish a bit smarter than usual. My favorite LMB cold front tactic was to use a 1/2 - 1 ounce walking sinker (depending on depth and boat speed) on a spreader . Attach a floating Rapala minnow with a 30 inch leader to the top arm of the spreader. Sometimes I would tie a white marabou feather about 12 inches back as a teaser. I would then slowly troll the edges of drop offs or channels. My largest LMB ever at 7 pounds was caught this way on a bright first day of a cold front.

Not that my previous residence encountered cold fronts like we do here, i only noticed changes in catches pending wind direction there in NC. So for cold fronts just go and let us know. Experience is the best teacher.

Bearing in mind that the primary objective of fishing isn't just only catching ...I've always ignored the phases of the moon, the barometric pressure, the predictions in the almanac, and so on. I schedule my fishing when I have the opportunity to go! If I catch anything, that's just icing on the cake. Taking that approach, getting skunked isn't as big of a disappointment!

Sometimes, the objective of fishing is to be NOT doing something else!

I'm with you, Barnacles, I go whenever it works.

I love fishing cold fronts, I won't fish as it approaches, I fish when it hits, and 2 days after it passes with some good NW or NE wind. But I live in west central Fl and cold fronts are normally not severe....just enough to stir things up. I do not fish around a full moon, the tides are way too strong

That’ll be the day. I’ll be out tomorrow as usual and as usual I’ll throw a Senco style rubber worm and hope for the best.

Goes to show fish every day you can, stay as long as you can, and ignore all the "old wives tales"! There is probably always some fish who get hungry despite the change in the weather. You can assume there are fish who have not watched the local T.V. weather broadcast and will be willing to strike a likely bait. Just Sayin....RJS

I once wasn't fazed by cold, but now usually wear a sweater in an air conditioned room even if the tempreature is 80 degrees. I just cannot tolerate low temps. Just Sayin...RJS

I heard the same thing before i moved to NC full time that 50* is like 30* in Maryland. I thought they had a few loose screws.

The first winter of being in retirement i found out that 50* was like they said. Here now in Maryland 50* still wearing shorts to run to the store. In NC i would be looking for the jeans.
