A southerner walked into a restaurant and sat down, the waitress walked up to take his order, and he said in southern drawl, "I'll have a glass of tea." The young lady wrote this down and returned to the kitchen where she emerged from a few moments later with a glass, she sat it down, the man drank it. And the unimaginable horror hit him, this......was.......unsweet......tea.

For a southerner unsweet tea is an object of horror, the Civil War could have been cut short had the Union poisoned the Confederate water supply with unsweet tea.

Well, this has started an argument betwix my wife and me. We are both native-born and raised Texans. She maintains that sweet tea was not always served in Texas and I, on the other hand, maintain that it was always served! Later, though, usually, the waitress would ask which you wanted!

I suppose the influx of people from the North, and yes, Yankees and others who did not drink sweet tea would force them to take the offending drink back and bring them what they preferred!

Which reminded me of a story. Two guys were fishing and one had mentioned he was thinking about buying a home but was concerned about financing. The other said well, Bill, you served in the army, get a GI loan. And Bill replied he couldn't. The other guy said I don't understand you did serve in the army, didn't you? To which, Bill with some trepidation, said, yes, but it was the German Army!

I now only drink unsweetened tea as a weight control measure. I still like sweet tea it is just not
amenable to my diet. Just Sayin....RJS

RJ, you're one of the few Southern boys I've heard to use the word 'Yankees' without preceding it with 'damn'.
When I was in the military, I had a Yankee screwdriver with a set of drill bits that worked with it. I can't tell you how many times someone wanted to borrow my 'Damn Yankee'!

And you're right, things are changing. Up until just a few years ago, the default way of serving iced tea in the South was SWEETENED, unless you specifically requested otherwise!
