MYBIGBEAR: Well, fisherman, you need to offer the food that large cats prefer, that is live sunfish, or perch. If you can get those then you are already halfway home in landing one or more big catfish. Next, this may not be in your plans, but fishing at night is often more productive because the biggest cats usually get out then. Just Sayin...RJS

Chicken liver. Or raw chicken rolled in strawberry Koolaid mix no water needed just soak powder into meat for a day or two. Chicken livers amd do it at night. Can try in day but will have much better results an hour or 2 after dark through sunrise

If it is legal in your state, don't screw around with a Koolaid witches brew. Just catch and use some life perch, those big cats love them about the size of your hand. Just Sayin...RJS

That’s very true Robert. I’ve tried that whole Koolaid thing. Didn’t produce a thing except a few little catfish I would probably consider more like catching baby bullheads. Any large catfish I’ve ever caught, which is not large compared to most (15 to 20 pounds) I’ve caught on night crawlers or fresh cut bait. I’ve never lived where I could use live fish for bait but I know people who do and have. I know a couple of renegades that fish the Snake River with live blue gill and they catch the monsters for sure. And I’ve, actually caught more of my bigger cats during the day vs fishing for them at night. The Columbia River produces some decent sized Chanel cats and I’ve caught most of them incidentally during the day fishing for sturgeon in deep water. They love pickled herring, salmon eggs and good ole night crawlers doused in “slam-ola” (basically garlic salt)

We drift fish for catfish on a lake here in Idaho. This may not work where you are because they all eat what’s available where they live specifically. We use a drop-shot rig with a 6” leader to the weight. For bait it’s night crawlers or fresh cut perch. Perch is their food source in this specific lake and we all know nightcrawlers work anywhere. Lol. A big Chanel cat in this lake is around 8 pounds with most being the perfect eater size, 2 to 4 pounds. All we do is get to a good looking spot, drop our gear and let the wind move us along. Kinda like fishing for halibut. Drift a ways till you stop getting hits then motor back to where you started and drift through again. About two hours before dark works best but we’ve caught a few right after the sun comes up as well. They stop hitting all together when it gets dark. In a river it’s a little different Good luck.

Hello Catfish Hunter: Well, finally someone agrees with me about catching big catfish, or at least those of decent size. If you have a problem acquiring perch or sunfish, go around any boat dock, use Earthworms on a very small hook and you can catch enough for a catfishing trip. Or if you have small children of perhaps grade school age, they love to catch perch at a boat dock. Just Sayin....RJS
