No, Bass, no catfish, no trout, no crappie, but we caught Blue Gills... We kept 8 & sent at least a dozen back to grow up. As you can see, I did not fillet them into "Gill McNuggets", but I do remember why I usually do. You know - the scales in the hair, on the face, on the tailgate of the truck, let alone my shirt & shorts, etc. It's McNuggets next time...
I think I'll just cook them in butter & at the end hit them with some fresh lemon juice. No breading at all, but maybe some S&P, onion powder & a tad of garlic powder. We'll probably eat them with our hands because of all the small bones.
I like to skin them. No flying scales.

Way to go Slug! Blue gill are mighty fine eating any way the're prepared. Tight lines.
Fishing Slug: Well, I don't know the fishing laws in Missouri, but you can certainly check. If you had kept some of those you released, you had in your possession the best possible bait for large catfish.
Next time, just or grins, use some of the bluegills you catch and fish at night for large catfish, who are very partial to them, and any other small live fish who are unlucky enough to be caught in their vicinity. I don't know if you are a catfisherman or not, but you are passing up a golden opportunity. That is if it is legal in your state. Just Sayin...RJS
I do believe it is legal. My wife & I will have to make a night of it. Thanks
Fishin'Slug: Well, actually you don't have to fish at night, I see on Utube others catching big catfish in the daytime, but that is probably because you would have a hard time filming any catch in the dark! Be sure to show your pictures. Just Sayin....RJS

So, next time I will save the "dinks" and try for a catfish. Where do hook them through the lips, on the back under the spine? Then do you weight it a lot to minimize its swim path, or just let it act naturally - a wounded fish? THX
Eating them this way brings back memories. My grandmother Scaled and fried them.

Great catch man!! Supposedly they are some of the best tasting fish, and next time you got to try a power washer, a buddy of mine showed it to me take the scales right off the fish🎣
I recommend hooking the sunfish behind the dorsal fin, but above the spine, allowing them to swim but not get away from a predator. Now, I never hooked a perch by its lips, and you might try that as an alternative, but I think the behind the dorsal fin best. Be sure to post pictures. Just Sayin....RJS
Nice!!!
Luv bluegill backstraps, down right tasty. The way you cleaned those bluegill is how we've done it for decades when camping & cooking on a fire. I like them on a grill that way also.
Targeting bluegill using ul equipment is just as much fun as going for large mouth bass to me. Sometimes I think a lot of fisherman forget just how much fun bluegill are to catch along with the excellent meals they provide.
