If I am left handed, what hand should I use to reel the rod?

90% of all rods I see, the handle is on the left side but the majority of the population is right handed.

You must be referring to spinning reels. Most of the baitcasting reels are rigged with the handle on the right.

Which side do you find most comfortable? If you are using a spinning reel, often they can be switched to the side you prefer. So, try it either way and then decide for yourself what you like best. Just Sayin....RJS

RJ is certainly correct. There is no "correct" way to do it. What ever you're comfortable with. I'm right handed, but my bait casters are all left hand models with the crank on the left. I cast with my right, why switch hands to crank it?

On spinning reels you become ambidextrous.
Just keep the reel on the bottom under the rod.
I watched some fish with the rod upside down.... (*Here is your sign..)

I'm not so much ambidextrous as I am screwed up. Some things I do right handed, some things left. I can't throw a ball accurately with the left hand, but that's the hand I eat with and draw pictures with and the hand I originally used learning to write. Then I went to a Catholic school in the 3rd grade and they "made" me change to the right hand. I bat right handed playing ball and I cast right handed. I also crank right handed. So I buy bait casters with the handle on the right and spinning reels are interchangeable. It makes it a little cumbersome spin fishing because you end up changing hands with the rod, but it works for me. That's the secret. Do whatever works for you, whatever feels right.

Do whatever's most comfortable for you. I'm right handed and reel left on both spinning and bait casting outfits. Fish don't care.

Level winds or bait casters can be had with the reel handle on either side. I being right handed and wanting the reel on top of the rod, my level winds crank On the left. They usually are not changeable. Or never changeable. My spinning reels and my fly reels all have the crank handle on the left. Why? Because I want to cast and play a fish with my strong hand and arm. My weak hand (my left) gets the benefit of mechanical advantage from the reel gearing so it doesn't need to work hard. And I don’t want to switch hands in the middle of a fight. Or after casting. You can decide how you want to do it but bait casters need to be bought depending on how you want to do it while spinning reels are usually reversible from right to left retrieve.

Which ever side feels the most comfortable and you have the best control. There’s no correct answer for that one.

I agree with previous answers, what you're comfortable with. I'm left handed, I use my left hand on my spinning reels and right hand on my baitcasters.

You know you can change the handles on those rails just unscrew the little screw on the side and take it out throughout the handle and you can switch it and put it in the opposite side and it would rule the same no problem now you have a left-handed real you have any more questions you're having a problem just give me a holler

You, and you alone can make this decision! What is your preference? That makes up the majority of opinion makers. Satisfy yourself and you have solved the problem and answered the question.

As Richard Adams has just pointed out, on Spinning reels, you simply switch the handle! Just Sayin...RJS

I'm left handed and use a right handed (handle on right side) reel (mostly baitcaster). No hand switching/simpler and quicker on line pick up. But I got started out in life that way because left handers in the 1950 got no
respect (hi Rodney) with all handles on the right as far as we kids knew. And guess what. The handles did not
disengage on the cast. Just spun fiercely backwards on the cast. Sometimes the good ole days were not all that
good!

harleypiker: Yes, you are absolutely correct. But times have changed because now you can order a baitcasting reel with handles of whichever side you want. Most Spinning reels have handles that are switchable.

Unless you are a 'hard core' leftie, why not practice with your right hand? I learned that in fact I am
ambidextrous and now cast with either hand depending upon the need. You might try it. Just Sayin...RJS
