Fly fishing: How heavy of a rod can I cast a dry fly with?

I live in an area with an abundance of steal-head, coho, and chinook salmon, and not very many trout. Now in order to fish these without fighting for an extended period of time and exhausting the fish, I need a heavy weight rod. The only problem with this is that I love fishing dry fly. There’s nothing better- but I’ve been told it’s near impossible to fish dry fly with the 8 weight rod I would need for some of these larger salmon. Does anyone have any advice? I’m still fairly new to fly fishing, and any help is appreciated.

When you're casting with a fly rod, what's on the end of your line is pretty much negligible. You're casting the fly line, not the fly. So if you've matched your line to your rod, you should be good to go. Whoever told you that, in my opinion, didn't know what they were talking about.

Spiritof27 is correct. I use my 8wt to cast dry and popper flies to large mouth because I need to pull them through lots of weeds and this works very well.

I’ve got a 9 weight intended for salmon and steelhead. I’ve tried it with a dry and it casts them fine. But most salmon and steelhead fishermen throw wet flys. I don’t use that rod much since I got it cause I don’t have any place to use it. It came as a package of two rods from a friend years ago the other is a 6 weight I use for trout. They are both 9’ rods.
