I have never caught a Salmon and really want to. Have not fished for them since lost my husband.
What is the best setup to use? Bait or jigs? I am currently in Grants Pass area. When do they normally start running?
Appreciate any help.

Hi egosser, it's been a long time ago for me fishing the Rogue. I was the park host 2007 to 2010 at Griffin Park. Best Salmon and Steelhead fishing from shore is at Findley Bend on river road. Also at the top of the gravel bar at Griffin park. If you can find the gentleman named Chuck he will put you on the fish, has a black drift boat. Rig for bottom bouncing 5' leader with half to one ounce weights, cotton balls or corkys, cured Salmon eggs are favorites. This used to be my best all time fishing areas on the Rogue, my wife and I would drift down, I fished and she had her wine, it was awesome. Good luck!

Consider hiring a guide, Learn from what they do.

Mel hit it right on. Hire a guide. If you can get one that shore fishes, rather than from a boat. you can learn everything you need to know when you start fishing on your own. And catch a few salmon to boot. The side bonus is that shore guides are usually cheaper. Let the guide know you hired him to teach you to fish on your own. When you go, don't just listen. Watch everything he does. If he does something and you don't know why, Ask. That is why you are paying him and that is why he took you on if you let him know your purpose up front.

This time of year fish down around Agnes. The Salmon will be up in your area in a week or so, but they start getting dark in the Grants Pass area. Also, as everyone is advising, get a guide.

Kyle 1234 said pretty much what I was gonna. Closed for Chinook above Dodge Bridge, but should (?) be some coho lurking your way and a bit further down (plus some summer steelies).
If next week's forecast holds, we're supposed to get a "rainy period of several days in a row, with cooler temps" ..... helpful to the firefighters, helpful in getting the rivers flowing enough to move some fish.
Check with the ODFW Recreation Report, click on Fishing reports, click on SW Area, scroll for the Rogue. Weekly updates. Local tackle shop or an exceptional employee in the sports department of BiMart might be a good source of more info.
Good luck, and welcome to the Rogue Valley.
