Tournament fishing for 25 years, San Diego region have some wonderful lakes with a lot of bass. Yes the fees suck but everything here in California cost more, you have Otay which is lined with tules to flip all day, San Vicente which is deeper with a lot of rock as well as submerged trees, El cap smaller lake with rock, lake Hodges which is cocoa brown water with some tules or sheer walls ( can be a very tough lake, but worth the chance of a big one, I have taken 2 fish over 10 lbs out of it), go a little north you have skinner lake and the best lake in the south Diamond Valley lake, very deep and at time extremely good. So take your choice as there is very good fishing in so. Cal

So much so that the local paper hasn't had a outdoor column in over 15 years, only charter boat catch results.

If you are into shore or (pretty decent) lake boat rentals, do not overlook Lake Dixon.
Been fishing it regularly for a couple decades now.
Live only a few miles away.
A nationally ranked largemouth lake.
Could share some ideas if you are heading my way.

Can you launch private boats there?

Sadly, no.
Though some years ago, I got 3-10+ lbers from shore on the double fluke in the thickest of weeds.
The lake has recently upgraded to offering a flat-bottom john boat for decent lake access.
As the lake remains high and shore access a little tough, a boat greatly improves your opportunities.
There are several SD County Lakes which allow private boat launch.

Thats what i thought, so have not been there to fish in years. Would love to bring my boat there and give it a try. Can't see renting a boat when I have my own

Hi Stephen!

That sounds great! I live off El Norte over by the old Country Club so I’m sure I’ll see you there at some point.
