Braided vs Mono

I started fishing recently, and had a few questions when there is a line resting on a rod is it for mono, or braided? also, I was reading around, is it true that a higher-rated braided line is the same as a lower-rated mono? like 20Lb Braided Fishing Line Is Equivalent to 6 lb mono? as in thickness, so braided will always be stronger?

thanks!

Braided line is much smaller diameter than the mono equivalent…therefore, 20# braid may be the same diameter as 6# braid. The line rating on the rod refers to the weight rating of the rod. If you exceed that, you risk breaking the rod.

As OJ said, braid is much smaller diameter. I use 20 to 30# on my surf rods, which allows me to spool more line at a higher # than equivalent mono. I also find my knots on the braid are stronger.

On the other hand, REEL line capacity ratings are for mono.

A lot of reels have both mono capacities and braid capacities listed.

IMHO:
Braid is a lot stronger then mono when they are both rated for the same amount IE 10# vs 10# etc. Braid is also thinner & doesn't stretch as bad as mono when over worked.

As far as the rod ratings go it really depends on the rod and what it's made out of. I've been using a pflueger 20 reel/4'8" rod combo with the rod made out of IM-8 graphite blank with 8# braid and catching up to 28" catfish with it along with 24" grass carp. Was targeting panfish and these fish get hooked from time to time.

I use 20 pound braid on a rod designed for 6 to 14 pound all the time but my drag is set more for the rod than the line. Most fishing tackle is rated below it real world capacity.
