Have any of y’all thought about letting a bass pull the line and run away to the (for lack of a better word) hiding spot, nest, school to figure out where to cast next? Just curious because it just popped into my head.

The problem with that is getting it out when you want to it will probably tangle the line on all types of things .unless your going to reach in and lip it out or cut the line and lose whatever you had on

Where you caught it is quite often where they are feedin. That's what I would rather find out. Not where they want to hide. No tellin what all kinda stuff there is to get hung up on where they hide.
Where they're feedin, maybe not so much.

Absolutely Saw, I wanna find where they're active, not where they're sleeping.

That's why if I'm not catchin fish and you really feel that the fish SHOULD be there. After I've tried for awhile, I'll move on lookin for fish that want to bite. Some do, and some don't. Look for the ones that do want to bite.

Well, while there's some logic to finding where a lunker might hide, or reside, there is a much greater chance that letting it have slack line, it will throw the hook and escape.

So the best thing would be to just remember the area where you got the initial strike. That area has a high likelyhood of being the home or feeding ground for more than one. Just Sayin...RJS

Back in the day before electronics made fishing simple (not) someone told me his favorite trick was to catch a perch and attach a small balloon to it on a length of line, then release the fish. Claimed the perch would always swim back to the school it came from, then he'd fish the school.

I used to do that with crappie. It worked great. That was over 50 years ago.

How did y'all attach the fishin line to the fish? Hope y'all were able to retrieve the fish and either keep it or release it untethered.

If you plan on harvesting this particular fish, would seem like a good idea. If it's under minimum size though, it's dead. Will be deeply hooked. I wonder if this is a situation where the hookless Velcro covered lure might make sense, particularly for a freshwater bass? Maybe it could be pulled free? Please all, I am not moralizing here, just wondering how I personally could approach this. Very interesting plan to observe fish behavior without sonar, camera, whatever.Hoping for response from others. Nutz

Edit: I got on this one before checking ahead for other responses.. looks like consensus is fish em where u catch em. As mentioned, does make a great deal of sense if looking to find a school if maybe your fish drifted away, and would tend to return to school. Crappies makes the most sense to me. Love this kind of learning experience with the digest. Y'all are great.

Let a bass hang on for that long and he has your bait down its gullet which is sure to kill it due to the extraction. So much for catch and release.

I used to fish with a covered hook when I fished the practice days before a tournament, let the fish run til it returned to the spot it came from and then put light pressure on the fish and they would eventially come to the top so I could judge their size. Tournament day I would have myself a milkrun . I used a bass jig with a real pork frog on it and day of the tournament I would use a worm or something else !
