Do I need a net for shore fishing?

Depends on what size fish your after. Pan fish, no. Bigger fish, 6-15 LB yes. The hools can pull out when lifting the fish.
You don’t always need a net but they are handy when you do
A net can certainly save you from a few lost fish.

Surfcasting saltwater demands moving up and down the beach. Carrying a net would be very cumbersome. If your not fishing for “toothy” fish I’d say no.
It’s better to have one not need it than to need one and not have it. Walmart has one for $6.44

I doubt a $6.44 net would hold up against a 10lb bluefish
Held this 5lb drum easily and the gar I do have a 44” net for $20 for the serious fish have yet to catch one that the cheap net couldn’t handle
If you are intending to release fish, they should not be grounded, drug out on the sand and rocks, dirt etc. spiny ray are hardier than trout but a net helps land a fish safely, gently and securely. No need to spend a lot of money, just get one big enough for what your catching with a handle long enough to keep you out of the water. And for you beach fishermen walking up and down the Bach, there is a strong rare earth magnet clip that you can attach one side to behind your neck and the other side to the outer end of the net. Let’s you carry the net behind you and reach it easily if you need it. Most fly fishermen use them and they are strong.
