Bad experiences cleaning fish.

I am fairly sure everyone has had an extra difficult time cleaning/filleting a fish at some point. I want to hear some of y'alls. Weather it was the first time you tried filleting a fish instead of leaving it on the bone or if it was just an extra difficult species or even a dreaded dull knife experience, I want to hear them. I think this may be good for someone who is a beginner and maybe just had one of these kinds of experiences.

I will start us off with mine. One that I remember as an awful experience was the first (and only time so far) that I've tried to fillet a carp. The thick scales were tough to cut through and for what ever reason when I tried to go down the side of it my knife would try to go up the y bones? Any way when all was said and done I had like 6 or 7 small, oddly shaped, filled with bone pieces of meat that I can't even really call fillets and I probably left about half of the meat on the spine. The meat didn't taste bad, it was just filled with bones.

Lukeon352: Well, Hoss you have disclosed the real secret why many do not eat carp. They are bony and it isn't easy to clean one. That's why we just used carp for a cut strip and fished with it. Catfish and sand bass love carp! More than we ever did, so we just considered carp as bait. Just Sayin...RJS

I am fairly sure everyone has had an extra difficu... (show quote)

Caught a nice 12 lb fish many years back, was scaling and got too close to the anal spike, zip, it entered my right index finger beside the nail and broke off. Was so painful but wrapped it to stop the bleeding and finished cleaning what fish I had. Several years later when had injury to my thumb asked if they would include my finger when they did the xray, showed the spike still there.

It was one of the most painful things I've had. After that I had more fish to clean and believe me I was very careful. Had over an hours drive home afterwards

My good friend's father would go to the VA hospital every so often and have some German shrapnel removed that he got in 1944 and 1945 (wounded twice). Did that for about 55 years, amazing what the body can tolerate.

Yes, I would wager that there are a lot of vets who cause compasses to act crazy, due to the ferrous metal still in their bodies. Just Sayin....RJS
