I remember my parents discussing that WW2 stuff too, that's why my dad was such a tightwad, which was sort of problematic with us boys, because if I wanted something I had to find a job, like delivering newspapers when I was 12 years old, which was ok to do back then, todays world that job doesn't pay as much when you factor inflation since the mid 60's. But I was able to save up and by a Tissot watch, what kid had a Tissot watch?! I saved up for all sorts of stuff, that watch was only $64 back then, now their hovering at $800 for the same series...which is a great deal more expensive than inflation would have raised the prices to.

Just give a kid at a cash register $10.01 for a $9.01 item and watch their face. Nuff said.

My parents were from farming families. They lived through two world wars and the Great Depression. I learned a great deal about self sufficiency from them. It seems that myriad valuable skills have been lost today.

I spoke to the people at our school reunion. Small school, town was twice as populated during school hours. I had been harassed about not using "GREEN" protocall. I informed that we did not use disposable diapers, we walked to the grocery store, post office, school and church. We handed down clothing, school books, autos and toys. We didn't drive to the mall to spend the day shopping. We all worked all summer on the farms in the area, or were babysitters, waitresses. Some of us worked on golf courses all night. (This had some perks if your girl friend showed up to help, but I digress) We didn't have air conditioning running all summer. Entertainment was mixed skinny dipping (once). Now, I can' find a soul to help here on this farm. Schools wont' teach cursive writing, wood shop, or descriptive geometry. I finished by telling her, a twenty something, to take a really good look at the differences from 1959 to 2021, then tell me about the "GREEN" bull s---.

I agree with you, Grumpus: We were very self sufficient and if it broke, we either fixed it, or did without.
My parents both came from large families, so we always had a large garden, orchard and truck patch! My mother canned vegetables all summer. We would raise a hog for killing in the fall after the first freeze. Sometimes a beef.

Farmers during the depression and after had to learn how to survive, or they pulled up stakes and went to California! Just Sayin....RJS
