How stiff is your rod?

I've never tried gizzards. Anymore My favorite bait is chicken breast mixed with strawberry jello and garlic powder. I have caught a lot of bull heads in lakes but never have caught any other kind of catfish in a lake. Know a lot of people seem to though.

Also try chicken liver left to spoil a couple of days. Fish after dark. Take small towel to help hold the slippery fish.

Chicken skins work well too and they don’t easily come off the hook.

Stiff rod is actually required. If you have bass gear, use the stoutest you have. Cats are not sissies.

Lakes or rivers, Makes no difference as long as you can find some deeper holes. In rivers where there might be more current use a heavier weight, lighter ones in lakes. You want to keep the bait a foot or two off the bottom, you can do that by using a small bobber at that distance from the weight, closer to the bait. Just be patient.

Either a lake or a river can be productive. I suggest you speak with local tackle shop owners and see what species are available in your area to fish. My preference for big 15lb cats in Lake Champlain in VT is well aged i.e. stinky chicken livers. I generally use 8 lb mono, but many would say that is too light. I like the fight. Good luck.
