I'm talking those kinda short chubby ones with the fantails that you get at the bait shop.

Illegal to use in my state, but "fancies" of various colors and fins, eyes, etc.
were released in a small park pond when liberated from a wishing well years back. Grew into enormous Koi in a few years and could be targeted with normal carp techniques. They were really cool to check out after catching. They were the first fish that I caught and released, just couldn't bring myself to harvest them, they were so beautiful. Haven't been back in many years, and understand they probably interbred with common European carp by now and evolved/devolved into common carp . Got me thinking, I should go and find out, the pond is open for shore fishing still to this day.( Mirror Lake in Hubbard Park, Meriden, Connecticut. ) .

There is one of the triple tailed fancy ones in a local sand pit here in Iowa, first time I spotted it my wheels stopped turning mentally like in WTF ? I knew it was alive cause it was moving ,but, WHAT was it ? The body appeared to be the size of a bushel basket not counting the fins , took me several seconds to realize what it was !

We used to buy gold fish at the local “dime store”. We’d turn them loose in the bass pond and they’d get huge. Stayed the bright orange color but they looked like giant carp after 3 or 4 years. Like 2 or 3 pounds and they wouldn’t bite anything we threw at them. Maybe we should have tried throwing a bucket of fish food in there😂
