typically my dad would keep his mid-way from bobber to hook, myself would keep it a bit lower to the hook for lighter weight bait to sink it, just curious what others might do

I have never used a weight with a bobber. Normally I use a Carolina rig when I use a weight and keep the hook on about 12" leader tied to a swivel and weight above the swivel. With a bobber I do about the same thing but use a slip bobber where I would put the weight on a Carolina rig. Real easy to adjust depth that way.
I usually use a jig 1/64 oz. and up as needed, under the bobber rather than a separate hook and weight. For perch I will put a 1/8 oz jig on bottom and a second 1/64 oz. jig about 12 inches up from that. I use a clip on float so that I can remove it if I wish the rig to free fall to the bottom. Any thing from a 1 inch soft plastic to a 3 inch soft plastic. Worms also work well. We can not use minnows here. If I need to cast any distance, I go to a slip on water weighted float.
Usually your bait will have enough weight to keep your bait down. I hang my bait so it’s just above the bottom, or weed line. Or whatever depth the fish are.
