Top water lures from the surf

Fellow stagers…question….i have never used top water lures before, im a cut bait kinda guy…especially from the surf.

With snapper blues and stripers showing up now at the jersey shore im going to try them out…..i saw a guy 30 feet from me using a top water lure last October and he pulled the biggest striper i ever saw out of the surf with it ,
thats why i thought id try one.

My question is this….arent top water lures a cast and retrieve lure? Fast for top water, slower for sub surface…etc..

Because the guy I mentioned cast his out….placed his rod in a rod holder and sat down in a beach chair…

I bought a 3 and 4 ounce Atom srtiper swiper and would think they would sink like a rock to the bottom unless retrieved….thats what he was using thought…..unless maybe a very strong current keeps it up in the water column ?

Also…..would a chunk of bunker or mullet on the treble help attract stripers and blues?

Do you put bait on the lure kandy?…

And i did catch a couple soaking bait but i seem to catch a dozen sand sharks with that method more than anything.

On the Striper Striker, no. threw it past first breakers and reeled it till I got a strike.

Try a Storm Shad just beyond the breakers. Instead of just fishing towards 12 o'clock also throw any lure towards 10 and 2 O'CLOCK. I use menhaden scented Pro-Cure in the surf with most lures.
Like most fishing however try and 'match the hatch' if you see blues or stripers actively feeding.

Ok..thanks kandy…thats why i was wondering why that guy cast his out and let it sit….he caught a monster….im wondering if the current was very strong that day and the lure was carried in it….i can’t remember.

Can’t go wrong with chunking fresh bunker Danger, I would not use a treble hook, they’re now illegal for stripers when using them for either live or once living bait. Have to use a circle hook. If you want to go artificial throw a big swim bait that resembles a bunker. If they’re blowing up on top, a large top water such as these should work. When they’re in blitz mode it doesn’t seem to matter what you’re throwing

Don’t have to have circle hooks on anything other than live or once live baits. You’re fine with trebles on any artificials. Good luck Danger and let us know how you make out.
