I have a stradic 10000 with 28lbs of drag and can hold mid 300 low 400 of 50lb power pro. With this reel could I tackle smaller tuna on jigs/ if I drop to 40lb power pro to get more line could I experiment with deep drop for tiles. I understand this reel is most likely not suitable for deep drop, but I’ve seen some anglers use spinners for tiles before. Very novice to offshore fishing so honest opinions are 100% appreciated and any pointers to better reels would be great.
For fishing, anything over 150 feet for me, I prefer to have the winch effect of a conventional reel. That right angle turn to retrieve a line on a spinner just adds resistance to the retrieve. For deep drop I prefer something on the line of a Penn Senator 113H, large capacity and relatively fast retrieve.
Many of the guides in Alaska use Penn 114 for halibut. That is drop fishing in 200 to 600 feet of water for fish up to 400 lbs. although 15 to 20 lbs. is most common on day trips in Prince William Sound as well as out of Homer. Spinning reels will ware you out with that kind of depth and the weight to get down that deep.
