Trout fishing in heavy weeds.
I'm a newb fisherman with no fishing friends. I have a nearby lake that I tried fishing at over the last weekend.
Frankly I'm pretty clueless on how to setup a line in general, but this lake in particular looks to have heavy weed cover.
I tried using a spinner and a passive powerbait setup as well, both were getting caught in the weeds underwater. I did use a flouro leader of roughly 4 feet and at most one split shot in both setups.
Also, I picked up some 12 LB test mono and the fluro I have is 8LB test. I was considering taking the line that came with the reel off and replacing it with the 12LB test line. What is the best practice to go about that?
I have a UlgyStik Gx2 (7ft 8-20LB Medium).

How deep is the water you’re fishing. Try using a bobber so that your bait hangs just above the weed line. You can’t use a floating bait like power bait. Worms work well as well as Salmon egg.
Little trick I learned fishing for trout in a lake like that in Montana years ago. Get the bait up above the weed's! Used these bugs we called itchy bugs we got under the rocks in the lake. Used a Carolina rig with about 19" of leader. Put a small marshmellow on the hook and the bug on top of the marshmallow. Then some years ago did pretty much the same here in Oregon but this time used Power bait. Didn't need the marshellow as the power bait floats on it's own, killed the fish! Carolina rig with hook about 18" below the sinker and something to float the bait off the bottom.
Might also try casting a torpedo shaped bobber with a fly about 2 feel below the bobber. No weight. Cast and retrieve early mornings and evenings when the trout are feeding. Keep the fly moving slowly. Caught many that way and chances are low that you'll be catching weeds. If you do, shorten the leader a bit. Good luck!
I use a slip sinker and a leader long enough to get above the grass line. I use night crawlers but use a needle to pump them up. They float off the bottom. Trout love them. I trout find a lot in Tennessee below the South Holston dam.
