Question/slight rant about hook sizing.

I've got a problem with hook sizes and the different sizing systems. So I have a lure I found with treble hooks. I decide I want to change them to inline hooks (they are getting changed one way or another) just because I want to.

I have no idea who made the lure, no idea who produced the hooks. Some manufacturers of hooks say my hook size is a #1 treble, some say its a #2. What do these sizes translate to? Beats me. maybe one or two manufacturers have a chart with inch measurments, but it doesn't help me out much since there seems to be no standardized measuring system used for describing the actual size for hooks. The closest I've gotten was finding a chart from Owner.

I first found a chart from an amazon listing for Drasry hooks when doing a google search for treble hook sizes. The chart says their treble with a total 0.92 inch width is a #1. I could not find anotehr chart describing hooks in this fashion. Going back to Owner's chart, a #1 treble would need a 3/0 replacement. Cool, so to verify the information I have, what does 3/0 measure out to? No idea and I cannot find information on that. Now I understand I can just get the hook size close, it doesnt need to be held within a tight tolerance or anything.

Welp, am I going to be one size too big? Too small? How about two sizes in either direction? Is being two sizes off that big a deal? That having been said, I was told by a friend that I can take my treble hook to a store and physically compare the size to an inline hook to help me get close and make a decision. The only issue with that is that I have no stores near me that carry inline hooks that I can compare to.

So I'm stuck with buying online. I'm not sure yet if I want to decide on this all being really rediculous way to measure hooks, or if I'm just a blabbering idiot. I'm mostly suspecting that there is some piece of information I am missing, or I am just making too big a deal about getting the size close.

How do I wrap my head around this? Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

I've gone through the same thing, when changing some crankbaits to single inline hooks. I guesstimated, and I'm happy with the results. One thing to keep in mind is that, roughly, treble hooks are sized by the size of ONE of their hooks, not the whole assembly. I believe the name means "size #2 three times." For example.Thats why the numbers are so different than single hooks.
I replaced #4trebles on a 1.5 crankbait with a 1/0 inline hooks,
and #2Trebles on a 2.5 crankbait with 3/0 inline hooks.
I think I guessed close enough.

Those look really good. What hook, by brand name, are you using. They have a nice size eye.
Thanks in advance, Fred. Tight lines.

I change trebles for in line singles on spoons and other metal lures simple because they're way easier to get out after a bluefish with a mouth full of teeth that I want to C n R. I might miss a strike or two but when the blues are there it really doesn't matter.

I might try that on some Trebles.
It is a nuisance with trebles tangles in the rod locker and in rod socks ...

And I’ve had to extract them from my fingers several times 😅
