Portfisher Loc: Chincoteague, Va

Not very familiar with the area and was wondering if anyone could tell me if the Hammond Boat Ramp is a public boat ramp that can be used? We have a place in Chincoteague and this boat ramp looks to be the closest to the island to gain access to the Pokomoke Sound and Chesapeake Bay. Thanks in advance for any info.

Hi Portofisher - I think you're referring to the Hammock boat ramp at the end of 788 south of Sanford. I have been in Saxis a number of times while visiting Chincoteague but only drove down to the ramp once like 10-15 yrs ago. Yes you are correct. That is the ramp I was referring too. There is a message on the website for that ramp that I was not sure how to take. " The access permit requirement for Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) owned or managed boat ramps enacted by the 2020 General Assembly (effective January 1, 2021) has been suspended until July 1, 2022. During this time, DWR will work with stakeholders to further determine the best means for the construction and maintenance of these recreational facilities." I assume this just means that it is open and no permit is required but not being maintained currently. Now I just need to make sure there are no restrictions on recreational crabbing or fishing on Messongo Creek. Thank You for the help.

Bigwolf Thank you for the info! I will have to look into that a bit. Up in my area public ramps have the option of a daily "drop box payment" for parking. I assume that is not the case there?
