Last one I caught was a beautiful 8lb blue on a nightcrawler. Anything you would use for any catfish will work. I am sure lots of suggestions are headed your way.

How big of one are you ready to catch? Those things get up around 100 pounds give or take. I agree with Jwid, whatever you'd use for channel cats. But if you want a big one (and you've got the gear for a big one) use a live fish for bait. Those big ones are predators and don't forget it. Bluegills work extremely well if they are legal. They're not here where I live. But check your state regs. Blues will eat em like pop corn. So will big channel cats and flatheads. The thing is, you ain't likely to catch a small one like that. So get ready.

Welcome to the stage Wildman. Some good advice already. But A lot of people are liking chunks of chicken breast soaked and Cherry Kool-Aid and also heard of cheap pork roast cut up an soaked with cherry Kool-Aid or powdered jello also. Google and YouTube are great resources good luck on your fishing and remember we all enjoy pics

I’ve only caught 4, 2 on live bluegills and 2 on cut crappie. If you have a reel with a clicker like a penn 209 or 309 leave the lever on for casting and set the clicker on. Other reels have clickers too. If yours don’t you better keep a close eye on your rod, when them blues take your bait they don’t give you any warning, they just grab it and run. If your not paying attention, bye bye rod!

Good mornin' and welcome to the Forum, SWildman. Check your fishing regulation about using live game fish for bait. We can't if we dock on the MN. side of the Miss. River, but our neighbors to the East, WI., can while fishing the Miss. River.

Good advice. I had a striper take a pole once and by luck i dove in and grabbed the pole and caught the bugger. I was a teenager then ever since i hold or anchor the pole

A lake. Just moved here to east Texas. Lotta lakes... I try to talk to locals and get tips but nothing has worked yet. Still trying. Going back to basics. Liver always worked back in california but im looking for a big blue now. Fingers crossed.

Might be legal some places, but kinda bad way to go. Have read quite a few articles lately about goldfish that were either lost or released on purpose, becoming a problem nation-wide.... one article showed a pic of a 6-8lb one.... wonder how many fry of a desired species (do goldfish even eat other fish ? Or do they just search for "those dinner-plate sized 'flakes' ?....lol) that beast consumed daily.
Best "rule of thumb" is to only use minnows (fry) of a species NATURALLY PRESENT in the body of water that you are fishing. Otherwise, we'll all be dealing with problems in our waterways, down the road, that rival the "jumping carp" and the many "species gone wild" that Florida contends with.
You MIGHT catch more fish TODAY.... but subsequent generations might not have a decent fishery at all.
(FAKENEWSFLASH-----ALL who responded to the recent survey, stated that Goldfish are NOT good-eating.... the lone response to the contrary, was from 'someone' named "Tabby"...no last name given....)
