Nice Rainbow yesterday from kayak from Gauley River at beginning of Rt 39 , Summersville.
My fishing buddy and I caught a few on Cherry River today right before the catch and release at the Gauley Ranger Station in Richwood.

Nice catching! I'll bet that rainbow was quite spunky once hooked! A very respectable brook trout as well in that first snapshot! I really enjoy all the colors, spots, stripes and upper vermiculation bands on those. Pretty cool to catch a fish that has every color on the paint palette represented! Thanks for sharing your kayak experience!

Thanks, interesting however. There should not be this big trout, or trout I thought in Muddlety Creek. I fished it 20 times for smallmouth in this location killing smallmouth though?

If I understand your comment, it sounds like you were surprised to be catching trout instead of bass...which tended to be usually more common?

I had an interesting experience once many years ago fishing for smallmouth bass in Darby Creek near Georgesville, OH. I arrived at the stream of a favorite spot and the side banks were fairly crowded with other fishermen so I waded to a spot far away from folks in my hip boots and began to cast my favorite Heddon red and white bass plug into a little riffle water. BAM...fish on! And what a tussle! In comes an approximately 18' rainbow trout that absolutely had me stunned! I remember it like yesterday, although it was 42 years ago!

When I lived in Columbus, OH, I used to spend weekends driving into the mountains of PA and WV to fish for trout...but rarely in this region of Ohio. I belonged to local fly fishing club and we used to stock brown trout by "hand" with float cages in the Mad River...so I did realize that there would be some trout around...just not in Darby Creek! Come to find out, a regional fish hatchery had decided to "stock" a few lunker trout in some surprisingly random places...in hopes that some lucky fisherman would reap the benefits and generate a great story for the local fishing crowds. I ended up releasing the rainbow immediately, much to the dismay of everybody on the banks that had enjoyed the show...but as soon as I left people were hitting that riffle pretty hard! That may be what happened in your instance!?

The fact that you caught a brook trout out of that water speaks volumes about the cleanliness. Brookies can't survive in water that's the least bit polluted. Kudos to West ByGod!

Ah...now that's funny! I am usually pretty good with my punctuation...but that was a slip for sure! Should have been inches! Pretty soon I will only be found in the "tall tale" section of the forum!
