Not if you liked the rod. Saw one snap a 4 to 12 ounce surf stick when the guy high sticked the fish. Fly rod, maybe a 10# could survive.

You have to take your time and coax them bad boys in they brake every thing I catch them on Cape Cod with my trout rod and a Salt water 3000 blast but a 17lb. 😱

I would stay away from ultra light, or even light rods for anything bigger than "Harbor Blues ". Maybe 2-8lbs. 10lbs and over you want a medium power at least. If you plan on eating them you want to land , bleed, and ice them ASAP. If you play them for a long time they will cook themselves, and spoil the meat. Especially in this 3 fish per day, time we live in, you're just hurting the fish, and wrecking your meal.

I'm not a big Bluefish eater but East coast when the schoolies come in there a blast to catch on the ultra lite I'm not talking about catching 10+ lb fish. 2 to 5 lbs about the norm definatly use a reel that can handle the abuse

I agree with you on how much fun they are to catch. I do like to use a lighter rod when I can catch the smaller one , but the morning my brother and I caught about 20 fish each and the smallest was well over ten pounds up to 16, I was glad I had my trusty heaver. Also glad to take a nap that afternoon.

You don't really want to use ultra light gear for bluefish. Here's what happens : pick one :
Get spooled
Snap line
Destroy drag
Break rod
Chase fish with boat all day (need FAST boat for any chance)
Get VERY lucky.. play Lottery next.
