Speedometer/Depthfinder problem

Purchased a 2017 Lowe Stinger 175 with a 60 Merc, 17'5", 4 people, 650Lbs--Boat is like brand new, looks new and runs like new. Boat has a Hook3x fishfinder in the dashboard and a seperate speedometer in the dashboard. First time out I noticed the speedometer worked great the first hour and then stopped working. During this same period of time, the depth finder became erratic showing up to 1600 foot depth where maybe actual depth was 160'. Need some guidance as to what has gone wrong and can I do anything myself to resolve the problem.

Boat speedometers are typically not very reliable so GPS is commonly used. I need a question answered to help with the depth finder. Is it screwed up all the time? Does it work fine when the boat is not moving and start messing when the boat is moving? Does it get worse the faster the boat moves?

Speedo and Nav System needs to be flat to hull and water. If speedo is pressure or a little wheel on stern be sure it has no debri on the part in the water. If 100% electronic the tranducer may be in need of replacement.

Calibration.....reset and restart the fishfinder in still water and be sure the Transducer is level to hull and water in NO WAVES.

I agree with Steve, and your depth finder should have a gps, built into it, and a speedometer, also built into it. If both went out at the same time, it might be your battery is weak. If your speedometer is one of the old style, it might work on water pressure and the line might be clogged up.

Steve....Thanks for the reply--Yes, the faster you go the more erratic the depthfinder is. There are 2 fishfinders in the boat, neither have gps. Can I use the gps on my smartphone? Would it show speed just like on a highway (Waze)? Do you think the speed and depth problems are related? Are they somehow hooked together?

Sorry Lou, although I'm pretty sure I know the answer I should have asked one more question. Is your transducer mounted outside of the boat on your transom? Or is it glued to the bottom of your boat shooting through the hull?

As for GPS you said you have a Hook 3X, I have a Hook 2X and it has GPS so I'd be surprised if you don't. Go to the Lowrance website and download the manual for your unit. If you have trouble with that let me know and I'll help you with that.

If it's erratic a high speed ckeck your screen speed. If you have wheel type speed reader make sure nothing is stuck on wheel.

We'll get back to the GPS as I have the information we need to deal with the quality of the signal at your depth finder. Your speedometer problem and fish finder problems are not related. The fish finder (depth) signal problem is caused by the position of your transducer. We're going to try and fix without completely moving your transducer first. You can change the angle of your transducer by rotating it up or down. Take your boat to the Lake and move it one direction. If the signal gets worse you are going the wrong way. Keep adjusting it until you get a good signal when the boat is not moving and when you bring the boat up on plane. Not all full speed, as slow as you can go and keep the boat on plane. Hopefully you'll find the sweet spot and won't have to move your transducer. Let me know how it goes.

Steve...Thanks for the info...My fishing buddy went to see family..I'm not good at launching the boat alone..when he gets back I'll try out adjusting the transducer--I thinks it's gonna work. The other issue with the speedometer, went to the Lowe dealership, they showed me on one of their boats that the speedometer works with the lower unit of the motor, a small pinhole that has to be cleaned out on the leading edge. I'll try both those things when my fishing buddy gets back and I'll report back to you. Steve, what kind of boat do you utilize, and where are you located??
