I've heard a lot of mixed things about using corn, can anyone give insight?
depends what you are fishing for. Trout, Kokanee, or carp corn can work good doubt you would have much luck with corn on bass, walleye, or tuna. But as I have learned over the years almost anything will catch a fish sometimes and nothing will catch a fish at all times, so just give it a try for what you are fishing for and see what happens.

Fish like it, but not good for fish since can't digest aand some states take exception to chumming with it.

I often used canned corn as a chum and also an attractive above the worm bait when fishing for Northeast winter flounder.

I used it a number of times ....2 large yellow kernels. .....From a can of corn.....on a hook.....let drift thru ripples....sometimes a small split shot above....most times nothing....

Is illegal to use in Calif.
Corn is especially good for Carp bait. Our friends on Great Brittion especally like the Green Giant Whole Kernel. Blue Gills, Trout, and other fish will take corn on a random basis. You can mix corn in a pack bait, fill up a hair rig hook, float float it under a cork. or use the little draw string bags from Thundermist Lures. Whatever method you choose, you will not be alone as all of Europe use corn in one form or another. Garry
P.S. Don't be surprised when a heavy hitter Catfish takes your bait and runs.
