Is the whopper plopper not respected or considered sort of a cheat code by the more skilled bass fisherman?

I’ve heard multiple of what I consider to be the more seasoned anglers I know sort of thumb their nose at it as if it is too easy to catch with. I love using it because top water is by far the most fun way to fish and it is by far the most effective one. Yes it doesn’t require as much skill to use as walking baits or other top water lures but it still requires a certain level of skill in casting accuracy and knowing where the fish are. I’m of the mind that any lure you can use effectively is fair game, this is just one of the better ones.

Why do you care what others say? As long as you fish legally and enjoy the sport, ignore when others try to put you down. Get out and enjoy nature and be a good steward of natural resources.

The purpose of ANY lure is to catch fish. However, a lot of lures catch more FISHERMEN than fish. If you find a lure that works for you and you're catchin fish, that means your bein successful. What more do you want?

This past year I have officiated some of the top pros in the world for MLF events in the north, south and Midwest. Over half have had a whopper plopper in the deck at one time or another.

What a question. Start labeling lures as cheats if they work? WOW!

Agree. That’s a little absurd.

One of mine too, Mitch. Hit Rayburn and Travis this year during and just passed the spawn. The WP was the best producer for the bigger fish.

Strange post to respond to. I have been bass fishing for 53 years. I have some “ skill “ catching bass, like a bunch of other guys on this site. I have been fishing whopper plopper baits since I first became aware of them being available in “ bass bait” sizes , those being 110 and 130 . I believe Larry Dahlberg first made it a musky bait, the 190 size........ I know several professional anglers that have a whopper plopper ( or a version of it ) tied on a rod on the boat deck all the time. And no, it doesn’t take as much “ skill “ as a walking bait , “ skill “ in this case being able to make the bait move in a certain way. The w.p. is a cast and reel back bait, just like a crankbait. Just like a buzz bait. Just like a spinnerbait. Just like a swimbait. Just like torpedo -type topwater baits. People like to put their own retrieve methods on these baits too, but there’s not much “ skill “ in that either. I’ve have never heard anybody talking bad about the w.p. I have heard people talk down live bait fishing being “ un- sportsman like” , but never an artificial bait like a whopper plopper. ....My 2cents.....

My point exactly. Then WHY wouldn't you want to use it?

I don’t see why anyone would have a problem with it.
I have the bass size and am not overly impressed. I have other topwaters I like much better.
Also have musky size. It looks like it should get bit but I’ve had exactly one follow. And zero commits.

I’m so guilty of this, Saw. “ However, a lot of lures catch more FISHERMEN than fish.”. I have some lures that I used on one outing and will never use again for many reasons. Doesn’t tune properly is probably the main reason.

I've never heard of a lure that makes it too easy to catch fish, other than in lure commercials.
