Daughter and her boyfriend want me to take them fishing in the morning. As my daughter says we have been riding the struggle bus this year.

We are heading to a wildlife area about 45 min from our house that has 14 different lakes / ponds ranging in size from 82 acres to 1 acre. Since we have not fished here before but have heard stories of the large Sunfish and bass that are caught here what types of areas should we try to find fish as we have no finder on our Kayaks. the last week has cooled down but today and tomorrow will be in the mid to high eighties. and should we try deep or top water baits. Last Saturday I even tried old school with worms and only caught 1 small fish i lost at the bank. Any pointers would be appreciated.

If you are fishing from kayaks and all 3 of you are relatively experienced fishermen, I would opt for crankbaits. They are excellent fish locators. You can use the “ power fishing “ method. All that means is make repeated casts to a certain area , fast as you can to maintain depth and get a reaction bite. Usually if you get bit, if there are more fish in the area, they will be excited from the fish being caught and will react to your crankbait too. And crankbaits are easier to fish from a yak than a worm . Second option for me would be a spinnerbait. The advantage for this type bait is less hang ups, less chance of getting stuck from a hook, but harder to “power fish” due to difficulty reaching/ maintaining depth. Third option would be a soft swimbait, skin hooked. Advantage for this type is easier fishing from a yak, less chance of getting hooked, but will not stay at depth long and has less “ flash” than a spinnerbait...My 2cents

For the Sunfish use a small bass popper about 1/4 inch in size. Work the shore line with it. You can use a small bobber for your casting weight with 1 foot or more to the popper. 1/2 the time they hit it they won't have it in their mouth. LOL Lots of fun though. I did it years back with a Fly rod, no bobber on that.

OK... this me being serious again. There is a part of fishing we don't talk about enough here on the stage. Specifically it's the mental aspect of fishing. You have to believe you are going to catch a fish on every cast. You need to see your lure in your mind as it goes through the water. Do things you think will trigger a fish to bite. If the fish aren't biting you need to become even more convinced you are getting a bite on the next cast. If you start to get discouraged mentally you will not catch fish. If you cast and wait you will wait a lot. Sometimes there is nothing wrong fishing like that if you are enjoying other activities. Trust me, catching more fish starts in your head and heart.

First...be the to have fun off the struggle bus. Take the time to acheive a non catching goal. Sometimes I like to try and ise as many lures in box as possible. ? I bought em, im gonna use em! Sometimes i break out the cane pole and catch gills and slabs. Just because. Im out to decompress and put the struggle aside for a couple hrs. Relax. If the freezer isnt empty it takes lots of pressure off yourself. Finally, enjoy the time with your daughter and son in law. This is your time with them. No phones, emails, or texts. Just you guys. I truely wish that opportunity knocks on my door. Tite lines!

Google earth is you friend, especially with so many small bodies of water to choose from. It may or may not reveal anything significant. But if possible, try and fish the ones that appear to be deeper than others. This gives fish more opportunity to find perhaps cooler water during summer… plus the deeper ponds give the fish a better opportunity to bed, and the off-spring to live. I’m not suggesting to fish deep, but edges and areas that have quick access to the deeper water is where I would start. And most importantly, just enjoy the experience as it’s really the hunt vs catch that motivates me. Good luck

I would try worming drop shot , Texas rig and split shot. Always works for me in New waters.
Good luck
