Any tips would be much appreciated. I am catching some fair channels and blues using worms and small gizzard shad fresh caught in my area, however I seem to be having a hard time hooking up to the big cats. Not sure if it’s my setup or just a location issue. I’m using a Santee cooper rig 2” float 7/0 circle hook and 3 oz sinker. I typically cut the tails off the shad and use 3 to 4 at a time. What am I doing wrong…lol
Chicken liver or Cow kidney ??

I have used chicken liver in the past to no avail treble hooks keep it on fairly well but it tends to fall apart pretty quickly. I also tend to get more gut hooks, but I have never tried cow lmao!
Big bluegill for big flathead
Wind threat around the liver

Hooked through the back or the lips and cut or live?
Live an I go through the mouth
Any particular spots? Near shore deep channel I am on the bank by the way haha just moved here from Washington had to leave the boat unfortunately:(
Deep hole if you can find one nighttime fishing is best for big cats in my opinion
Make sure that's legal in Kansas - it's not in California. We can't use any fish for bait that is considered a "game" fish, and that includes bluegills. If it is legal, a live bluegill is one of the best baits you can use for big cats. Chicken livers. Cut you a big patch from a pair of panty hose, wrap the livers in that and then wrap that up with magic thread. Now it won't fall apart on you and the cats don't mind at all.
If you can find fresh mackerel, cut up chunks of that. It's bloody and oily and pretty tough stuff, stays on the hook very well, and the kitties love it. If you have an oriental market you can probably find it there.
Stick with that float, keep your bait near but off the bottom.
Get you some 80 or 100 pound test Tufline Dacron fishing line and use that for leader. It's very soft and absorbs the flavor of your bait.
I agree with you on that one I have definitely seen more action at night. I have the 5 to 10lb range pretty dialed but I’m after that river monster!

I will definitely swing by the market and see if I can find some. I’ve used the pantyhoe trick before but I did it to catch big gar never thought about it for catfish. I will double check the regs here but I believe it is legal you just have to catch the fish by hook no cast netting them. I’m running a medium heavy mad cat with the abu 7000c3. Went with 50lb mono. Maybe I need to up my game! Lol :)

Thank you I am double checking it now but I believe it’s fine as long as you catch them by hook and not in the cast net.
Just checked the book it is good as long as they are caught hook and line! Sweet!!!
