I remember those splinter getters. They are the ones that the coach would stick in right field knowing no lefties on the other team. Problem there was that a good right fielder should be in on almost every infield grounder. Did the coaches teach that, i think not.

Back up the 2nd baseman, wild throw from the plate, and throw from 3rd over the 1st basemans head to name a few.

We all learned early to backup the others. I Pitched and played short stop so I knew most any play I was backing up second or third and when I pitched, I backed up Home Plate. Seems we played more of a team sport back then, now it's all about the best players and his tennis shoes or whatever else he's selling.

Good coaches taught that, the others were more concerned in what mom and dads said about their kids.

Yea n still dad at home. Looks how many kids now look at the coach n say it wasn't a strike. I won't be a umpire for any amount if money now. Too many umps are team affiliated now. You can see their bias when playing in home team field. Adults have ruined baseball for many kids. 😕

There was a lot of that back then too, I know my dad threw a couple over zealous fathers out of the park and He was all about the game and wasn't biased as to who won. Dad played the game when he was young and from what I've been told he was pretty good. He taught me about the game when I was very young, Hitting, fielding and sportsmanship and he Dad taught me something he expected me to learn it and practice it. I raised my son the same way and he turned out to be a really good man.

I played and made Shortstop at my High School, granted only 2800 population but was only the 2nd at my school as a Freshman to do that, I loved playing and hitting. My loving Sons 33, 32, played hard in Little League,Babe Ruth , and High School, camaraderie is what I've always taught them , your right Ivey , down to earth.

I know I'd get in grandson when he was pitching n he'd act up. I told him he doesn't set the strike zone ump does. Learn it n throw to it. The catchers should know zone n put you there. During my time helping with little league i met alot of good kids n pain in da butt parents. Also plenty of poor managers. Yelling n cussing. Telling kids they was the worse team he ever coached. That really built their confidence up. Wouldn't take time to help those less skilled. I liked the kids that blamed a loss in everyone but him. Even if he didn't get a hit n made a couple errors. All because his parents told him it wasn't his fault.

Dad and so I was a Braves fan, we were at the game when Hank Aaron hit his 500th home run. They passed out signed cards that I was in the park the day of his 500th. very few of those cards went out, Man I wish I still had that card. it was in a shoe box full of my best cards that my mom threw out when I left home...
