Has anyone in western washington been catching any crawdads? I've tried a couple different lakes that I know have them but so far, I'm unsuccessful. Thanks

For eating. I've caught them by the bucketful in years past, but just not catching any this year.

I've never harvested them for the table, so know nothing about that. Down here in the rice fields you just dig down in the mud and come up with about 20 or 30. Not big enough for people to eat, but the fish love em. How do you catch em normally?

Crawdad traps. About $15 apiece. Different people use different bait. Some use canned cat food, some use dry dog food, or raw chicken or fish scraps from filleting. We have Signal crawdads that are native to this area, but also some from down south that are considered an invasive species. I built an escape hatch in case I lose the trap.(required by the fish and game dept.)

I have crab pots with cotton on the bunji that hold lid shut. But Iā€™m figuring it will take longer than the crabs would live for it to rot. What do you think?

I believe you are absolutely correct. They would only live until there was 1 left and he wouldnt last much longer.

Years ago, my Brother and I put on our skin diving gear and gloves, and picked up lots of crawdads from the bottom of a clear stream in the Northern California mountains. It was easy peasy, but I'm too old for that now. I absolutely love them bugs, and any time I get to Louisiana I make good and sure to find some crawfish etouffee.

Sounds like fun. And that etouffee sounds like a real treat. I do love crawdads. I'm going to try a pond that me and my best friend(RIP Gary) used to go to when we were in our early 20s. Everytime we went there, which was only 4x, we went home with a 5 gallon bucketful. Hopefully, I'll strike it rich again. Maybe my buddy can pull a few strings up there where he's at. He'll be watching, that's for sure. Happy fishing everybody.

Good luck, Hooter!

I had a bucketful of steamed crawfish once, in a Louisiana restaurant. I was enjoying them a lot when a lady at the next table told me "You're throwing away the best part! You should suck the heads!
...I looked into the front half after breaking off the tail, and - - sorry, no can do!

Crawdad tails (only) for me!

I hate to tell you, but she is absolutely right. Sometimes it's just better to not look at what you're eating.šŸ˜‰
