I'm visiting family in Quincy, CA tomorrow for a few days. Any trout fishing recommendations for that area?
Thanks, Steve

Me again. I've fished quite a bit up around there also. I'd go to Lake Davis, that's probably your best shot for catching trout from the bank. A little further east, not a lot, is Frenchman's Lake. Lake Almanor is a world class trout lake but can be hard to fish from the bank. There are springs in that lake and that's where the trout hang out this time of year. You need a boat to get to em. Buck's lake is another good one, known for it's Mackinaw - lake trout. You can catch smaller ones from the bank, the big ones are out deep. They are delicious. And just on the west side and south of Almanor is Butt Valley. I've never been there but it's on my bucket list. I hear the fishing up by the inlet can be phenomenal. But like I said, I'd head to Davis were I you. Take Grizzly Road north once past Portola and just stay on it. That east side of the lake has all kinds of good shore access.

The drive back east from Quincy going into Oroville is some gorgeous scenery. The Feather River Canyon. You should make some of the drive just to look at it. And there is good access to the river and there boucoup trout in it. But - you need to take a lawyer with you to fish it. I mean, you need a lawyer to interpret the regulations on that particular stretch of the river. There are many small power stations along there, and each has its own small reservoir behind. You can fish those, but make sure where you're fishing is legal. And that's the hard part. I once asked a warden if it was legal to fish there and he basically told me that if I had to ask, if I wasn't sure, I shouldn't be fishing, which I was at the time, but I told him hey that's why I asked. He gave me a dirty look and said yes it's legal. Now having said all that, it's about impossible to catch a trout in those reservoirs because they are full of what we used to call squawfish, but now, to be politically correct, are called pike minnows. Now they can be fun to catch, they fight real hard, but you don't want to eat em I've been told. So there you go. Just make sure you know the regs, because it is patrolled.

I would stay as far from that Dixie fire if it were me. Smoke and ash do not make good fishing.

Thanks so much! With the Dixie fire going, from what I understand, north of Quincy is inaccessible. We will see. When we leave for home on Sunday, there will be no time to fish because Tuesday I leave for the John Muir trail for a month. There will be plenty of trout up there.😋 Thanks again for sharing!!!

Well for future reference, all those places I mentioned have great trout fishing. Historically at least. Who knows what the future holds? Good luck, tight lines and let us know how you do.

Hey you guys and gals on here familiar with that area - you ever been to Butt Valley or Mountain Meadows? What's the fishing like on those two? I've been to Almanor and I've fished it a couple times, but never to those other two. Is it worth the ride? And what about little Round Valley? That's looks like it could be a hidden treasure?

The Dixie has reached the shore of Butt. Round Valley is in the thick of it. I am fishing Almanor next week...smoke permitting.

Fished Butt some years ago, ...have a friend who fly fishes it with lots of success. mountain meadows was fun to fish for bass...however, PGE drained it a few years ago...do not know if it has recovered...I concentrate on Almanor and Eagle lakes

I fished Eagle about 20 years ago - we spent a week or so up there. Great time and great fishing. I guess if I lived in Susanville that's where I would be heading too. When I was up there they had some strange rules - you could only take two, but if you caught one you had to keep it. No c&r. Is it still like that? I enjoyed it, but the trout were pretty easy pickins. We'd go over by the cattails (?) before the sun hit the water and the big guys would be up in there feeding on the little ones. Throw a worm up in there under a bobber and wait about 30 seconds if that - fish on. With those rules and those conditions, your fishing day would be over real quick.
