I put this picture into another post on here, but thought I would do a separate post to see if I might get more responses. I find it fascinating, the number of names we all have for the same fish in different parts of the country. So, these are just about anywhere in the US that folks fish, except for a few places probably, when you catch one what do you call it?

And the second picture, where could I go in California to catch one of those? And what would you calll it?

Top- Bluegill, Bream, Cracker.
Btm.- Yellow Perch, Striped Perch

In Virginia, top picture is mostly referred to as Bluegill and occasionally Bream, Bluegill Sunfish, Sunfish, or Sun Perch. The bottom picture is most commonly referred to as Yellow Perch, followed by Ringed Perch, Raccoon Perch, and finally Striped Perch.

The first one is a green sunfish, just one of over a dozen sub-species, including bluegills, red-ear, red-breasted, etc. !

The second is a true yellow perch,
a smaller cousin to walleye, sauger
and saugeye ! Only place I could find for them in California is Iron Gate
Reservoir, on or near the Oregon border !

Sorry BongsonBob. You're gonna hafta post a picture of you or someone you know holding a yellow perch that was caught out of Lafayette Reservoir in the east bay. I ain't believing it. All the information I could find on that lake says bass, catfish and it's stocked with trout in the winter. Says nothing nowhere about there being yellow perch in it. Not tryin to start a fight, but you gotta do more than just say that it's so. Gotta back that up somehow.

I can back it up with fish that I've caught there. Someone dumped some in there 30+ years ago, and they never left. The information you are using tells you what kind of fish East Bay Parks stocks. Next time you are in Lafayette stop by the Ranger station. When you walk in the front door look to the left. They have pictures of all of the fish available in the reservoir, including yellow perch. Then ask one of the rangers, or someone who has fished there for some time. I'm confident enough to bet my whole stack

Thanks Hack. I just made an enquiry to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Information Department. I'll see what they have to say. I live about 10 miles from Folsom Lake, I've fished it a few times over the past 20 years or so, and to my knowledge it doesn't hold yellow perch, but your list there says it does. I don't know what that means, but one of us is wrong. I think. If DFW is not an authority, then who do you think would be? U of C?

Photos?
I'm not trying to start a damn fight, but I'm basing my beliefs on over 60 years of fishing for many species of fish including yellow perch, and over 40 years of fishing in California, during which time I have never seen or caught anything resembling a yellow perch, yet here around Sacramento, seems like every time I ask anyone how the fishing's going they're apt to tell me - "oh not too good, caught a couple of perch". What? You'd think they were everywhere.

I was curious myself Spirit. The first list of rivers and lakes didnโ€™t mention the Yellow Perch. Then I went to California lakes and rivers and this popped up. Two of my cousins who live in the mountains in Grass Valley are retired Game Wardens. I guess I could have asked her or her husband.

Is that right? Wife and I are going there in September or October to visit my cousins. Weโ€™re waiting until itโ€™s cooler weather. My mother lived in Desert Hot Springs with my Aunt (her sister) and passed away there. One of my cousins lives near Lake Tahoe.
