It was a magical day!

My brother and I visited our favorite small reservoir in Wyoming last week. Spent 2 days fishing from our little fishing boat. Day 1 was a bust. 3 caught. But on the way out we ran into a couple of older gentlemen who had been slaying them. While we would never ask what they were using, my brother discreetly looked at their setup and made some complimentary oohs and ahhs. The old guys took a liking to the lad (of 58 years), and reminded him to remember what the fish actually eat in that lake. When Steve told me what they said, I had an ah-ha moment, and we made a trip to the grocery store. After buying the appropriate natural fish food, we returned to the lake the next day. What a difference! We fought the hawg rainbows all day long. They tried pulling our poles into the water. They fought like - well, like pig rainbows! I was supposed to go home, but figured Miss Valerie would get over it if I was late, which I was. Oh, yeah. Days like that come around every decade or two. You gotta love Wyoming.

Nice bows. Kinda looks like Viva Naughton. Caught a bunch way back when there was a marina and cabins. Lived on the lake while working out of Opal.

I ain't saying where we were. But I remember that lodge - and the cabins and old broken down trailers at Naughton. Larry Cook had a great thing going there. Kinda reminded me of No Name City in Paint Your Wagon! Had some mighty good times back in the '70s and '80s. They had live music, chicken "poop" contests, and Larry grilled the best steaks I ever ate. Or he would cook whatever you brought in for him. Those were good times for sure.

Had some of the best prime rib I’d ever eaten. We had a care package sent to us from home with crawfish tails, etouffe, 8-10 count gulf shrimp, lump crab meat and a few other items. They went nuts when we pulled all that out and started cooking. We had plenty and shared it with them and they cooked steaks and baked potatoes to go with it. Really nice folks. It’s a shame it’s all gone now.

Yep. I agree. They were good people. I think I saw Larry in Kemmerer a couple of years ago. I was up there for the ice fishing derby and think I saw him at Burger King. Gotta admit I've had some good times in that part of the world. Started going to Naughton in the early 1970s when I was still in high school. It's always been a fun place, but like you say it's lost a lot of its charm since the concession disappeared. I went up there when Larry was taking the lodge down board by board. Said he was taking it all up to Fontenelle, but I never saw anything up there. There's nothing there now.

I went to Pocatello a few years back on business and had time to drive over and was pretty disappointed. There were maybe 4 vehicles there with folks fishing and camping. It’s a part of this country I won’t forget along with Jackson Hole and Yellowstone.

My brother thought I was being stalked by velociraptors when we dropped down on the stream for a while. I was walking through the willows and couldn't see very far away. There were these 4' tall birds making dinosaur sounds. Turned out to be Sandhill Cranes. They were all over the place. While we were walking out there were mule deer 50' away from us - unconcerned. You just have to love that place.

Trolling was unproductive. We needed to stop and toss the anchor.

Someone told me Larry had been a chef someplace back east before he saw the light and came to God's country. I wouldn't be surprised. That man could cook!

I will guess you used shrimp for bait.
