51 and first crappie ever
I'm new to this site and would like to show you a picture of my very first crappie. I've been fishing in Washington state since shortly after I could walk. I've caught a lot of different fish species, both saltwater and fresh. I mainly fish for trout regularly. This year I decided in was going to try targeting panfish. I've been doing fairly well catching perch and a few bluegill, but the crappie weren't giving it up. Until right before dark, 2 nights ago. I was trolling back to the boat launch with a rapala floating jointed brook trout, and caught this crappie in the photo. I missed another one a few minutes later. It's always cool adding another species to my tackle box. Looking at all of the pictures posted on here is great. Keep your lines tight gentlemen and fish until you die. That's how you die happy.

Way to go Hooter. And welcome to the stage.
I’m 68 and still haven’t caught my first crappie.

Nice Crappie Hooter, they are normally low light feeders. You'll find them deeper in the daylight hours normally close to old creek channels, drop offs or shaded areas. We fish from them at night from time to time here during the summer, a floating light in places like under a bridge or close to a bluff wall. The bait fish show up first then sometime during the night the crappie show up and we have a ball. Love the taste of crappie, they're my favorite fish to freeze and eat thru out the year.
Welcome Hv have you eaten crappie?
Nice on you have there.

Nice one you have there.
Thanks everyone. Eastern Oz, that was the first thing I did when I got home. I filleted it and threw it in the frying pan, as I had never eaten one. I'll say that they are very tasty. Crappie beware! Any more crappie catching tips or tricks will be greatly appreciated and put to use. Today it's the King salmon that had better beware. Here comes the Hootervillain! Have a nice day to all!
I was about 73 before I started fishing for crappie. had caught two by accident before that but not a clue why. Guy from Bend took me with him to Prineville Reservoir and we got 30 we kept. That was about three years ago and now I'm hooked! Only things I actively fish for anymore are crappie and catfish!

Yes don, i know the feeling well. I love fishing for crappie, catfish, bream and fresh water perch. But mostly crappie that's my favorite by far. I'm 69 and been fishing that type fish since about 8 years old. Very tasty fish here in North Carolina. Keep fishing my friend and enjoy. Tugg!
Congratulations on that crappie! There are so many species to pursue! Sometimes it takes us a while to get around to them all! Thanks for sharing your adventure/story!

Great catch hooter, i bet that went really well with slaw and hushpuppies?
I love the taste of crappie my favorite to eat for sure. Keep fishing my friend and enjoy those kinds of catching.
Looks good to me. Welcome.
Is there any other place that has good crappie fishing that is closer to Portland, OR? I work in the Hillsboro area and am looking for a crappie fishing location but everyone seems to tell me that it is only good in Prineville Reservoir.
