Has anyone been doing any good fishing the Colombia this year? I took the year off this year (May through September squawfishing) to build our house and that didn’t work to well but. The house that is. Lol. My buddies are telling me the fishing is really slow down there. I’m gonna try to head to the Snake River in Washington in September when things slow down at the elk ranch here and try to catch a few. Usually the walleye fishing is killer down around Hood River from the middle of May through the end of June. Sounds like that didn’t go so well this year either.

Hey Catfish, looks like everyone is on the coast going after coho, friend just went in his sons boat outta Newport, brought a quart each of red and purple coonshrimp never opened em, didn’t go 5 minutes without a hit on hoochies. Hit some bass hotspots in the Columbia by hood river but only guys I seen walleye fishing was by the dalles. Probably gonna take a break from life and find a bank spot to relax and catfish on the Yakima one night. Tight lines

Thanks. I think I heard where the coho are doing good right now. It’s been a long time since fished coho on the coast over there. Caught a ton of em and they were good eatin fish. Kinda far for me now but it’s usually worth the trip. Catfishing from a lawn chair sounds like a great idea.👍

Yeah Shut Up…. And Fish they are biting. On the West Coast. Right where you said. I always liked the West. It’s the Best. Even when you go to where your headed you will still be in the West. If you feel like coming by sometime I will cook up some of the Coho from yesterday. I made Ceviche with Rockfish…. Yeah the Gorge has lots of good fishing. Like I always say the West is the Best.

We catch quite a few decent Chanel cats at the mouth of the Klickitat. You ever try there? Just off the rocks below the railroad bridge there in Lyle. Mormon crickets on the bottom. Catch lots of walleye there too. My PB walleye was 17 pounds off the rocks there. One of my fishing buddies lives right up the river there above Lyle and he’s a fishin fool. He caught 27 walleye right there in one night with a chrome rattle trap with a blue back on it. One right after the other just before dark. He didn’t make, but about, three casts all night without hooking one.

Just got a call from the number 7 anger in the squawfish program. He only caught 1095 fish since May 1st and is packing it in for the year. We usually catch twice that many by now. The top angler, which is the the first two on the list because he takes his wife with him, is at less than half what he usually has by now. Not good. I picked a good year to stay put at home looks like. He doesn’t really target walleye but catches a ton of those and he said that was slow too his year. I’m gonna hit it hard again next year and hope for the best. People say you can make $100,000.00/year catching squawfish. I’ve done it for 8 years and I can tell you that’s not as say as it sounds. Most of us, in the top 10, make between 18 to 30 grand a season (5 months) and we fish hard.
On a good note, if you’re still planning on doing some catfishing, my buddy called me from Lyle and said they’re still catching decent Chanel cats pretty consistently off the rocks there. Night crawlers and Mormon crickets. We get our crickets up Blalock canyon above Rufus.

Been pretty busy wrapping things up to move to Wyoming but friend just asked about a.m. steelhead trip and this guys boat stays wet, knows every steelhead in the Columbia on first name basis, can’t pass that up. Might throw a few hours at the rocks at Lyle in next couple days. Side jobs slowed as whatever idiots in D.C. are doing making $15 1/2 Cdx go for $83 or the back door I moved a wall to be able put in went from $198 to $360
What’s a decent channel cat run there?

Small end 5 pounds, upper end 15ish. The blues are usually smaller. My biggest blue cat so far was 7 pounds up on the Snake.

The blues can get the biggest of the big three, throw a side of chicken breast at em on a 10/0 and making 30k fishing sounds better than my spending it fishing

I’ll try that. Oh yeah. If I only made enough to pay for fishing I’d be still be happy. Free fishing plus a few bucks? Even better. I’d say I clear about 60% of what I make. The top angler in 2016 made $119,000.00 but at the end of the season he said he worked for about $6.00/hour after expenses. But keep in mind he fell asleep driving and wrecked his suburban and totaled his boat. That took over half of his income that year. He’s been the top angler for 18 years and said his best year was when he fished from the bank and made $20,000.00 and slept in a tent along the river eating fish he caught over a camp fire. Fishing from a boat is very expensive now days if your doing it for 5 months straight. Bad gas mileage, high gas prices, boat ramp fees, towing it around, registrations all that. Bank anglers skip all of that expense. I do a little of both but more from the bank than a boat. You know how the Columbia gets. Many days it’s not fishable from a boat.
