Virginia beach fishing

Hiya folks, I'm going on a trip to Virginia Beach in a few weeks and was wondering what I can expect while fishing from the pier. This will be my first non-freshwater fishing experience, so I have no idea what to expect or prepare for. Should I just rent everything I need at the pier, or bring my fw equipment? I have a WST 9'6" heavy rod/Abu Garcia c3 6500 reel I'd be willing to bring, if the saltwater wasnt too harsh on them. Again, I know nothing about sw fishing, so I may not be making a lick of sense.

And if anyone knows of any good fishin holes I should check out while I'm there, I'm all ears!

Which pier are you going to? When I was there I would go to the one right by the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel a lot. Bring your own gear and just rinse it afterwards.

Most people there go after croakers, they are easy to catch and there are lots of them but they are small. Crabbing there can be fun if the season is right. If you put a bait in the bottom and leave it you will catch a skate. Bounce a gulp on the bottom and you might catch flounder. A sabiki rig will catch plenty of bait, but you can also buy bait there.

Same stuff applies if you go to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. I prefer CBRT for fishing but it is a long way out there.

If it's HBRT then order a Mad Haddock sandwich or Buffalo shrimp, both are amazing.

CBBT pier is closed indefinitely unfortunately. I think they're widening the tunnels. What pier do you mean when you say HRBT? Buckroe? I think Buckroe is probably the most productive pier in the area so I second that if that's the one you're referring to.

VB fishing pier can be pretty productive. You can probably catch a lot of croakers and round head (whiting) and maybe a flounder or 2 off the bottom. If you have any casting spoons, or gotcha plugs the bluefish bite can be pretty exciting. You may see some of the locals pulling up massive 40+ lb red fish, but I wouldn't count on that. I think its 10$ to fish the pier and that includes license so you don't have to purchase one if fishing from a pier. They also have rental gear if you don't want to bring your own.

I prefer to fish Rudee inlet or Lynnhaven inlet. There you can do very well on flounder, specs and puppy drum. You can rent a kayak anywhere, or you can hire a guide and they can probably put you on fish, provide a quality fishing kayak, and gear, and teach you enough to get bye. If you launch out of rudee (Owl creek is the name of the launch) There is a hole near the front of the aquarium and thos aquarium pilings hold fish. I recommend a popping cork with a 4" gulp mullet on a jighead. Or you can go to any bait shop and get some squid or crab and bottom fish. I like quartered blue crab for fishing for reds. You can fish at the end of VB where rudee inlet meets the ocean and catch an assortment of fish and maybe even a couple keepers. You must have a saltwater license there though.

This whole area has really excellent fishing, but it's still a tad early. Middle of June should be really hot fishing though all the way through October.

Did you like VB? Catch any fish?
I am going for 6 days to fish Sanbridge Area beaches.
Any more tips from your trip?

Thanks
