Surf shark fishing setup suggestions

For the longest time, I have been using the Penn Slammer III to fish off the beach. Fantastic reel but I am getting a bit tired of being nearly spooled by the bigger fish. Therefore, I am looking to invest in a separate conventional rod and reel combo for targeting sharks. I'm not looking to catch monsters here just more than my slammer can handle. I was looking at the Shimano Tiagra (30w) on the higher end or possibly on the lower the Penn Senator? Have not looked at rods yet however. All help and advice is appreciated - thanks.

Those are basically trolling reels, not really designed to cast. Look at Abu Blue Yonder 6500, Diawa Lexa 400, Penn Fathom Star drag ,or Shimano Talica. Also offerings from Avet and others.

Perhaps you could reduce the pound test of the line currently on the reel. Might give you enough extra line to avoid purchasing a new reel.
