My municipal water supply is treated with chlorine based stuff that is toxic to bait. I Use frozen well or spring water for cooling bait water. Or the plastic things that you can keep in the freezer are good. Or, seal ice from bucket water somehow. You may not need this for bluegills , I don't know but for shiners it's critical. I catch my bluegills just before I need 'em.
In a pinch I used melt water from my cooler to refill the bait bucket with an aerator
Bought 4 dozen emerald shiners in Detroit for spring walley run . Didn’t use half of then that day and planned to extend them to next day. Can’t remember but I think this 4 doz cost me like $28. Didn’t want to lose em obviously and the bait shop was kinda out of the way
Worked fine.
Fresh non toxic cold water and an aerator over night and they were still lively. Maybe one or 2 floaters.

Battery powered aerators are great. For long term aeration, try using a combination of an aquarium aerator plugged into an inverter. This device, when connected to your 12V battery in your car or boat, will last all night and more. Inverters come in different wattage capacities; my big one is great for power outages and run my refrigerator, a lamp, and radio in the house.
